The Star Rod is a magical rod from the Kirby series that has also appeared in the Mario series. Its most notable role is in Paper Mario, where it is central to the game's plot. It also appears in Mario Party 8 and the Super Smash Bros. series.

In Paper Mario, the Star Rod is an artifact created by ancient magic.[1] It can grant any wish to its holder. It is stolen from Star Haven by Bowser and used to grant all of his evil wishes. Using it, he easily defeats Mario by making himself invincible. Mario and his partners must save the seven Star Spirits to deactivate the power of the Star Rod.

In the final two battles against Bowser, the Koopa King would use the star rod to make himself invincible or to recover HP. After freeing all of the Star Spirits, Mario can use the star beam to cancel out the Star Rod's effects when Bowser makes himself invincible.

The Star Rod is also the reward for becoming the Super Star of the Star Carnival in Mario Party 8. After completing the game's Star Battle mode, MC Ballyhoo will award the player with not only a year's supply of Candy, but the Star Rod itself, which he had be carrying in Big Top all this time. However, Bowser swoops down and steals the rod, claiming he's the real Super Star. The player then chases Bowser to an area called Bowser's Warped Orbit, where it is recovered after a long battle.

The Star Rod has appeared in the Super Smash Bros. series as an attack item. It is swung by a player, sending out stars that harm their oppenents. The Star Rod can only shoot twenty stars, but the swing itself can harm opponents indefinitely. The Star Rod is most effective when used by Sheik or Captain Falcon, as they shoot multiple stars in quick succession.
