Since no other comments have been made to the above discussion, and a staff member has insisted that the discussion be continued, I think we should start a proposal. The English ''Mario Portal'' refers to this enemy as "Ground Urchin" for the ''Super Mario Galaxy'' section and as "Hot Urchin" for the ''Super Mario Galaxy 2'' section. Which of the two names should we use, if at all?

Naming issue

Since the English Mario Portal uses two names for this enemy, which should we go by? "Ground Urchin" is used for the Super Mario Galaxy appearance, whereas "Hot Urchin" is used for the Super Mario Galaxy 2 appearance. I'd go with Hot Urchin since it's used in reference to the more recent game (assuming we're not considering 3D All-Stars). --Waluigi's head icon in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. Too Bad! Waluigi Time! 13:00, August 13, 2022 (EDT)
Agreed. -- KOOPA CON CARNE 13:05, August 13, 2022 (EDT)
I'd personally go with Ground Urchin as the article title because these names were technically released simultaneously, so I don't think it really falls into the usual "recent" naming - it's a closer translation to the original name, and these Urchins aren't exactly "hot" as they can be easily burned up. That said, I think Super Mario Galaxy 2 info should still use Hot Urchin. LinkTheLefty (talk) 13:11, August 13, 2022 (EDT)

Decide which name to use for this enemy

Template:SettledTPP Template:ProposalOutcome Since no other comments have been made to the above discussion, and a staff member has insisted that the discussion be continued, I think we should start a proposal. The English Mario Portal refers to this enemy as "Ground Urchin" for the Super Mario Galaxy section and as "Hot Urchin" for the Super Mario Galaxy 2 section. Which of the two names should we use, if at all?

"Ground Urchin"

  1. Archivist Toadette (talk) I think this name is the most straightforward, since it adequately defines what the enemy is. Also, it doesn't always appear in lava-themed areas; see Battle Belt Galaxy as an example.
  2. Bazooka Mario (talk) So far, more names seem to refer to the land aspect of these things.
  3. LinkTheLefty (talk) In addition to what was said before about the Urchins still being burnable and the "recent" naming not being applicable (also note that this is the only enemy outside of some usual resize shenanigans whose name isn't uniform there), I think it could potentially be misread kanji: compare "land" (陸) to "hot" (熱).
  4. Blinker (talk) Per LinkTheLefty.

"Hot Urchin"

  1. Waluigi Time (talk) Since it's being used in reference to the more recent game, this is the one I'd personally go with.
  2. Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) The purple ones appear on the ground/negligibly shallow waters on rare occasions in the SMG games too (Freezeflame in 1, Slimy Spring in 2), and these are usually found in hot areas; even the Battle Belt ones were on a distinctly scorched-looking planet.
  3. Hewer (talk) Per Waluigi Time.

Keep at "Urchin (land)"

Comments

Regarding the "misread kanji" point, looking those two characters, they don't seem to have much in common. What is it about them that would make someone mistake one for the other? Blinker (talk) 11:13, September 1, 2022 (EDT)

I'll try to explain as you may need to zoom in: look at the strokes on the right of 陸 (land) and the upper-left of 熱 (hot). They're variations of each other. Also consider that no furigana is provided to show the proper reading, and it becomes entirely feasible that someone could've rushed through it and caused the odd discrepancy. Again, outside of the expected-at-this-point resized enemy weirdness, this is the only enemy whose English name differs between sections, as Portal has made the modern names uniform even in games that use older translations. As such, I don't see why we can't use the more accurate translation in this case. LinkTheLefty (talk) 11:29, September 1, 2022 (EDT)
Very radical, dude. Might not be actual radical but that's the very general term of it. Icon showing how many lives Mario has left. From Super Mario 64 DS. It's me, Mario! (Talk / Stalk) 00:10, September 2, 2022 (EDT)
