Black Dino Piranha[1][2] also known as Dino Piranha (Black),[3][4] and Fiery Dino Piranha[5][6] is a boss in Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario Galaxy 2. It is a black, fiery and more challenging type of Dino Piranha that serves as the hardest normal boss fight in both games. It is an analogy to Dino Piranha, the latter being the first normal boss of the game and the easiest, while Black Dino Piranha is the last normal boss and the most difficult. The black-colored design of Fire Piranha Plants may be partially inspired by the design of Black Dino Piranha. Black Dino Piranha share its boss theme with Dino Piranha and Tarantox.

History

Super Mario Galaxy

Black Dino Piranha first appear in Super Mario Galaxy. Black Dino Piranha is fought in the final level of the Melty Molten Galaxy, "Fiery Dino Piranha". The beginning of the battle is much like that of the normal Dino Piranha fight, with Mario landing on top of the egg, cracking the egg and waking the Dino Piranha. As Dino Piranha trots around, the bulb of the tail ignites and extinguishes in a steady rhythm, forcing Mario to wait until the tail is extinguished to attack and break the egg away.

Once it emerges from the egg, it spots Mario and chases him, moving much faster than its normal counterpart. However, the bulb's fire still flickers on and off, still forcing Mario to wait until the tail is not on fire before striking.

After the first strike, Dino Piranha stomps in anger, and it continues chasing Mario, leaving a trail of fire behind its footsteps. After the second strike, it begins shooting fireballs out of its mouth, making it harder to maneuver around the planet to reach its tail, and the bulb's fire also flickers on and off in a faster pace. After Mario hits the tail a final time, it is defeated.

Super Mario Galaxy 2

Fiery Dino Piranha, along with other bosses originally from Super Mario Galaxy Dino Piranha, King Kaliente, Major Burrows, and Bouldergeist, reappear in Super Mario Galaxy 2 in the Boss Blitz Galaxy in a reenactment of the respective original fight. Fiery Dino Piranha and the other bosses have all booked return tickets to the cosmos for this challenge. But none of them is as tough as Fiery Dino Piranha, who is back and madder than ever![7]. The Black Dino Piranha is the last boss to be encountered in the Boss Blitz Galaxy and the overall final boss in the game, while its normal counterpart is the first boss, being again an analogy. Black Dino Piranha acts exactly the same as before, though heat effects have been added to its planet. If Mario loses a life while fighting Black Dino Piranha, he must fight Bouldergeist again due to the placement of the Checkpoint Flag.

Fiery Dino Piranha Boss Fiery Dino Piranha is very similar to its counterpart Dino Piranha, but with one scorching difference — it can spit fireballs and its tail becomes burning hot. This presents a new challenge to Mario in the Melty Molten Galaxy where he must battle to collect a Power Star. A few star spins will still defeat the beast, but not when its tail is burning!
