Find a better name and/or potentially merge with Shifting wall[edit]

As I stated prior in the proposal that split this article in the first place, I am not too entirely confident on the name here. While yes, it's found in the SMW section of a Prima eGuide for the SNES Classic Mini, it's specifically mentioned in the game's Confidential Information section, and is coined by Bramz, one of the two speedrunners invited to share tips and tricks here; and as far as I'm aware, neither of them are officially associated with Nintendo. Here's a quote from the section:

Sandbar Clip

The second to last stage is Valley of Bowser 2 (secret exit). In the second room, there is a maze featuring a moving yellow platform referred to as the “sandbar.” If you are big Mario ducking in a one-tile gap, you can Spin Jump and clip into the floor. This can be used to skip one cycle of the sandbar, saving 12 seconds. Toward the start of the sandbar section you must run, duck, and press A within a two-frame window. Once you’re out of bounds, you have to quickly build up speed to fly up and duck into a gap. If you clip but don’t make it into the gap, you’ve missed the skip and won’t save time.

I'm also not too keen on moving it back to "sand tide", since that name was coined from Prima's Super Mario Advance 2 guide, which was from an era from before Nintendo of America stopped making official Player's Guide and Prima became the primary provider for Nintendo guides; meaning they should have less priority than the official Player's Guides at the time. Yet, said Player's Guides from the original SMW and SMA2 alike can't seem to stick to a particular term for these. Then again, maybe neither does the Prima SMA2 guide, given that their Galaxy 1 guide doesn't have a consistent term for the sand tides in Dusty Dune Galaxy, but I can't say for certain since I don't have that guide at hand.

Another potential solution is to merge it to shifting wall, since they do act a lot like those, but happen to be shaped somewhat funky at times; it is also not much of a perfect solution considering it's more of a sinking platform in stages such as Vanilla Dome 1 and Chocolate Secret. I think the similarities between sandbars and shifting walls start and end with being platforms that can crush you, and sandbars are certainly not generic walls. The shifting walls page suffers from several problems. There is genuinely a recurring subject there, but it is trapped alongside generic objects that, although similar, are definitely not the same. As for the name, if neither option is entirely reliable and we do not find any better names, I do not think using "sandbar" is bad at all. It is easy to follow and understand, and at the end of the day, it is used in official material. I do not think this naming issue needs to be overly deep, honestly. "Sandbar" works fine imo. Well, it seems that in Kodansha's SMW manga, sandbars have more going for them, so I don't think a merge is good here. Sorbetti Mr. Sorbetti (talk) 02:42, November 1, 2026 (UTC)
