Using a POW Block makes one appear above each racer ahead, causing them to spin out and drop items (coins in Coin Runners) upon the third strike. Some course obstacles, such as [[Penguin]]s and [[Piranha Plant]]s also get temporarily stunned. A POW Block symbol is also above the player that used the item, but it does not affect them. Players who either shake the controller or start a wheelie do not spin out as much. Players are unaffected entirely if they are either in midair, launched out of a cannon, or are using either [[Super Star|Stars]], [[Mega Mushroom]]s, or [[Bullet Bill]]s. POW Blocks may also be dodged by [[Hop (move)|hopping]] at the exact moment the POW Block strikes, though this is precise. Only one POW Block can be in play (like the [[Thunder Cloud]], [[Spiny Shell (blue)|Spiny Shell]], [[Bullet Bill]], Blooper, and Lightning).
