The Mogura Bakudan are the first of seven inventions made by Dr. Mario Nakamatsu that he gives to Mario in the "Time Traveler" story arc in the Super Mario Kodansha manga. They resemble a Bob-omb, but despite the name they are much more akin to a bird, with wings, talons, and a drill for a beak.
This first invention is pulled out by Mario in chapter 1. In the Jurassic Era, Bowser enslaves the Yoshis to build a castle, as a promise to Chibi Peach so that he can later marry her. To free the Yoshis and destroy the castle, Mario deploys the Mogura Bakudan, which begin digging underground, while his friends take the Yoshis to safety and Genshi Yoshi takes care of the T-Rexes. Right after that, the Mogura Bakudan explode nearby a magma core, destroying the castle with a volcanic eruption, with Bowser and Chibi Peach inside, although the two come out of it unharmed, just dirty from the dust in a cartoon fashion. With the palace destroyed, Bowser escapes with Chibi Peach to another era.
