They are featured in red and green variants; between them, only the latter appears in any underwater-themed levels, though they are more common in shallow pools elsewhere. The green type, which appears cyan in [[fortress]]es in the original version, simply swims back and forth slowly. Red Cheep-Cheeps have a variety of behaviors; above ground they animate faster than others, with most swimming before leaping from the water in order to hit Mario and others instead bouncing along the surface constantly and make a large leap once they approach Mario. In caves, red Cheep-Cheeps jump between small portions of water, and cannot be seen or interacted with while underwater. There are two variants of Cheep Cheeps: green ones (which replace grey ones in the ''Super Mario Bros.'' style, and are added wholesale in the ''Super Mario 3D World'' style) will swim endlessly forward while gently bobbing up and down when placed underwater (or, in ''Super Mario Maker 2'', in the nighttime airship and sky themes), and similarly will jump endlessly forward when placed outside of or on the surface of water (or any similar liquid), while red Cheep Cheeps will swim for about seven blocks in place when underwater or turn around at the peak of their jump in Mario's direction outside of water. Collecting the [[Big Mushroom]] after scanning the 30th Anniversary Mario [[amiibo]] gives the Cheep Cheeps a mustache and ring-shaped lips similar to their modern design in ''Super Mario Maker'', but like other enemies are unchanged by the Big Mushroom in ''Super Mario Maker 2''.

If placed in [[lava]] in the castle theme, Cheep Cheeps become engulfed in flames, which renders them immune to [[stomp]]s, [[fireball]]s, and [[Superball Mario|superballs]].
