History

Mario Tennis series

Mario Power Tennis

Power Shots are special attacks unique to each character in Mario Power Tennis that are triggered from a button combination depending on the control scheme. After a set time, players' rackets glow and make a special sound to indicate that they can use a special shot. If players press R Button in start of a button combination, their characters also glow; computer opponents often glow when they lose a point and have a power shot available. There are two types of Power Shots: Offensive Power Shots and Defensive Power Shots. The offensive power shot is used when the ball is near the player. These come with special effects to disorient the opponent(s). If a player with a glowing racket returns an Offensive Power Shot, the glowing effect is removed and the player must recharge their racket.

If players set their control scheme to manual, offensive power shots triggered may fail if players are too far from the ball. If the control scheme is automatic, a Defensive Power Shot is performed instead.

Defensive shots are weaker special shots that help players reach the ball. In fact, Defensive Power Shots can also negate the added effects from Offensive Power Shots. Some Defensive Power Shots may fail if the ball is too far away, such as Mario's, Princess Daisy's, and Petey Piranha's.

Mario Tennis: Power Tour

Mario Tennis: Power Tour's RPG mode revolves around the player and other characters developing Power Shots. Power Shots can be earned by completing minigames at the Tennis Academy Training Center, and the player can then assign any offensive or defensive Power Shot available to them, to Ace or to Clay. Additionally, there is a Power Shot under the name Power Shot in the game. Power Shots are also used by members of the Royal Tennis Academy varsity class, competitors at the Island Open, and the entrants of the Peach Tournament.

Mario Golf series

In the Mario Golf series, Power Shots are shots that extend a character's drive with limited uses per games. If players perform a shot with perfect timing, however, they do not consume one use.

Mario Golf: World Tour

In Mario Golf: World Tour, the number of holes to play can be adjusted, the number on the Power Shot meter is equivalent to the number of holes being played divided by three.
