Australia is a country located on Earth; it can also refer to the continent that the country of Australia is a part of, but other names commonly used to refer to the continent are Australasia and Oceania. This real world setting has received references in Mario media.
Australia appears in an episode of The Adventures of Super Mario Bros. 3, "7 Continents for 7 Koopas". When Bowser tries to conquer the entire Real World, he orders Cheatsy Koopa to capture Australia. Cheatsy uses his magic wand to turn all of the humans into kangaroos, except for a Crocodile Dundee-type hunter, who is transformed into a prawn. Princess Toadstool eventually steals Cheatsy's wand, and restores everyone back to normal.
Australia is the second course in the Japanese version of NES Open Tournament Golf. It follows Japan and precedes France.
During the events of the game Mario is Missing!, Luigi traveled to Sydney, the most populous city of Australia. Also, the city of Perth was seen on the game's world map, the Globulator.
A land similar to Australia, known as Down Under Land, is featured in the episode "Crocodile Mario".
