Template:Infobox New Super Mario Bros. is a side-scrolling game exclusive to the Nintendo DS, starring Mario and Luigi. It is very much like the original Super Mario Bros. games, but the characters look more 3-D, and it takes place in a whole new world. Almost every Super Mario Bros. enemy and character has made an appearance, such as Bullet Bill, Goomba, Lakitu, Koopa, etc., as well as brand new ones. As usual, 100 coins still gains you an extra life.

New Features

One feature that's new is that this game brings a 3-D move into the 2-D world— the Wall Jump! This technique lets you reach new areas for more exploring! You will also have the ability to Ground Pound once again, so you can smash blocks downward. Also, there are more power-ups, like the Blue Koopa Shell that lets Mario travel like a kicked Koopa Troopa shell, the Mega Mushroom that makes you grow about five times your size(Also seen in Super Mario 64 DS), and the Mini Mushroom which causes you to grow super small. It still has the old ones, too, like the Super Mushroom and the Fire Flower.

The game also features a world map, different and secret paths (like Super Mario World), and a multiplayer mode where you and another friend can have a friendly battle between Mario and Luigi, or you can work together. You also have the ability to store a power-up on the touch-screen after Mario or Luigi already have a power-up.

One odd thing about the game is that there are eight worlds, but you only have to go through six of them—the game jumps you from World 3 to 5 and World 6 to 8 automatically. Mario or Luigi must defeat the World 2 and/or 5 bosses in Mini mode to instead reach Worlds 4 and 7, respectively.

Also new are Star Coins. There are three to a level, usually adding an extra challenge to each level. Some are in clear sight while others are hidden in warp pipes and other inconspicuous places. On the world map, signs block paths that require five Star Coins to open. After a player defeats Bowser and Bowser Jr. in Bowser's Castle, a new, mysterious blue Toad House will appear just above World 1. It is a shop, and for 20 Star Coins, the player can buy a wallpaper. The fifth and final background is only available after all of the 40 Star Coin Gates have been opened.

Another secret is Challenge Mode. This means the player cannot scroll the screen to the left or downward. To unlock it, go to the map screen (any world) and press START, L, R, L, R, X, X, Y, Y. It will also show an arrow pointing right on the world maps and levels touch screen. This means that you cannot turn back in all the courses ecxept castles.

Story

Mario and Princess Peach were walking together around Peach's Castle, when a mysterious thundercloud appears near Peach's Castle, and struck the castle with lightning (the thundercloud might have been the 7th boss, Lakithunder). Mario went to investigate, and while he was there, Bowser Jr. sneaks up behind a bush and kidnapped Princess Peach! Mario followed, and Bowser Jr. dragged her behind him through eight different worlds to get away from Mario.

The end of the first world has Bowser as its first boss, unusually. Even more surprising, after Mario presses a switch that destroys the floor and Bowser falls into the pit of lava, the king is mysteriously transformed into a Dry Bones like version of himself (Known as Bowser Bones) by the lava. Later, at World 8, Mario has to face this undead version of Bowser as the second to last boss in the game. The bones of Bowser fall into a bottomless pit, but somehow, Bowser Jr. got his father's bones, and he revives him by putting his remains into a bubbling cauldron of some magic potion, which results in not only Bowser returning from the dead, but growing roughly five times his size.

At the end, Bowser and his son fight Mario, but Mario defeats them again, sending the two into yet another bottomless pit. After the ending sequence, Bowser Jr. is shown dragging his unconcious father across the castle floor. When he notices the player watching him, he shouts something and then continues on with his task.

Trivia

  • An interesting note that usually isn't noticed is that in most levels the chorus in the music will make a "bah"-like sound, and almost all the enemies will do a dance move, and items will jump in the air. It's not helpful but it's funny when a long line of Koopas do a little side step and the Goombas hop to the background music all at the same time.
  • Wario and Yoshi are playable in the game in the mini-game mode.
  • The seven original Koopalings were said to appear in this game, however it was later said it was a mistake, however Bowser Jr. was still in it.
