Three Goonies.

Goonies are white birds found in the games Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island, Yoshi's Story, and Yoshi's Island DS. They also make a minor appearance in the game Yoshi Touch & Go. Goonies are essentially Dinosaur Land's answer to the seagull. They appear in most mountain levels and are always found in groups. Goonies have many different behaviors; some fly and carry items while the flightless ones run along the ground to create a blockade. Some are very fat and try to squash Yoshis by rolling around like large boulders.

Jumping on their heads is a good way to hitch a ride, but when they appear in large flocks, air traffic becomes a major obstacle.

A Goonie appeared in Tetris Attack allied with Lakitu.

There are many different varieties of Goonies. Gray Goonies flock around oceans. There is a Dry Bones-like variety of Goonie, known as the Skeleton Goonie, which usually carries bombs.

Flying and flightless varieties.

In Yoshi's Story, Goonies appear only in Stage 3-3: Poochy & Nippy. Gray ones appear in Stage 5-4: Shy Guy's Ship.

During the cutscene where Mario rides the Whale to Lavalava Island in Paper Mario a Goonie can be seen flying over the ocean. Unlike most characters in Paper Mario (one of the few other exceptions being the Whale himself), this Goonie was three-dimensional.

Goonies made a comeback in more recent game Yoshi's Island DS. Here they were less common, though they did have two levels named after themselves: Goonie Heights and The Goonie Coast Isn't Clear!. A Goonie boss named Moltz also appears.

Goonies appear in the Super Smash Bros. series in the background of a Yoshi's Island stage (unlockable in Melee). Goonies will also appear in Super Smash Bros. Brawl, once again in the background of a stage.

Trivia

  • Goonies are probably based off of a real seagull-like bird, also called a goonie, which is another name for the albatross.
