::Looks like it can be interpreted either way to me. The beard also resembles something on Egyptian artifacts. While I think the initial basis was indeed MesoAmerican, it looks to me like they may have thrown in some details from another desert culture (ancient Egyptian) to spice things up and keep them from being too trite. Jaxi is not a Lion because:

1. He has spots 2. His name is a combination of Jaguar and Taxi 3. That's not a mane is That's not a mane, it's a kind of collar
