"Minuscule" vs. "Miniscule"[edit]
To avoid an edit war, I'll tell you my reasoning for the reversion. According to this Grammarly article (archived version if someone for some reason checks this in the future and finds out the link died), which cites other English resources, the following has been said about the validity of "miniscule":
- "[...] the first instance of miniscule appeared at the end of the nineteenth century. However, it didn’t become popular “in edited prose” until the 1940s." (attributed to Merriam-Webster's Dictionary of English Usage)
- "[...] dictionaries began accepting miniscule during the later years of the twentieth century." (attributed to Primary English: Extending Knowledge in Practice)
I hope this serves to explain why I initially reverted that edit, so we can see if we reach an agreement. I would have posted this source had I not made the reversion on Android TV of all things SuperGamer18 (talk) 17:47, September 24, 2026 (UTC)
- Thank you, SuperGamer18, for your reasoning; I, however, disagree, and these are my reasons. First, minuscule is etymologically superior to miniscule, for minuscule comes from minuscula (and not "miniscula" https://www.etymonline.com/word/miniscule), which is the feminine form of minusculus https://www.etymonline.com/word/minuscule. Second, minuscule is recommended by most usage guides; miniscule is often proscibed by the same usage guides that prescribe minuscule https://proofed.com/writing-tips/spelling-tips-minuscule-or-miniscule/ https://our-languages.canada.ca/en/writing-tips-plus/spelling-frequently-misspelled-words https://brians.wsu.edu/2016/05/24/miniscule/ https://www.dailywritingtips.com/minuscule-vs-miniscule/. Third, miniscule is considered, at best, an inferior spelling to minuscule, and, at worst, a complete error (see usage guides above). Fourth, the form "miniscule" is rarely used by Nintendo's games. I remember seeing it once in a Pikmin 4 Piklopedia entry, but I have not seen it anywhere else. The Nintendo Web site, however, is a lower priority to Nintendo than their games, so they often have spelling errors and grammatical mistakes (once they supposedly misspelt profile as prifile. The quotation mentioned in the article was from Nintendo's Web site. (To see whether the other quotations from Nintendo's Web site with "miniscule" in them are accurate is a different matter.) Fifth and lastly is that the dictionaries that list "miniscule" as a variant usually tag it as disputed, which means that even the most lax dictionaries do not list it as fully accepted (excepting Cambridge dictionary), to wit, Merriam-Webster https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/miniscule and The Free Dictionary https://en.thefreedictionary.com/miniscule. I hope I have given you a satisfactory answer. Good day or night. It's Spelt W-h-o-a (talk) 20:35, September 24, 2026 (UTC) @SuperGamer18
- Quick question, why do you spell it "Web-site"? — Lady Sophie_17

- I spell it that way because it is the original spelling from the 1990s and 2000s. I spell it like that because I believe it a more proper spelling. Hmm.... It appears that there was no hyphen in Web site; I shall remove the hyphen now. It's Spelt W-h-o-a (talk) 21:11, September 24, 2026 (UTC) @LadySophie17
- I see. Well, the modern spelling of the word considered more proper and correct nowadays is definitely "website", as defined by the Oxford, Cambridge and Merrian-Webster dictionaries. A look at Google's Ngram viewer has also showed me that the spelling of "website" has seen around as much use as "web site" since the very start, having definitely surpassed the latter around the late 1990s already. I felt I should point that out as your spelling was odd to me. — Lady Sophie_17

- I understand. I feel as if there is nothing wrong with "Web Site", though, except that it may look unusual. There is nothing wrong with "Web site" etymologically. Not being correct etymologically is one reason I do not accept miniscule as an alternative spelling. I do indeed understand your argument, however. I would be confused if someone spelt choose as chuse because the declaration of independence spelt it thus. (Until the 1700-1800s, Proto-Indo-European words had much more flexible spellings than Latin words, especially Latin words that were taken nearly directly from Latin.) In any case, we are derailing the conversation, and this conversation is about the spelling of minuscule, not Web site/website. It's Spelt W-h-o-a (talk) 21:52, September 24, 2026 (UTC)
- I put a [sic] on the page because fastidious editors like me would change miniscule to minuscule, but miniscule is the way it was spelt on Nintendo's Web site; ergo, I must put [sic] to show editors not to edit it. It's Spelt W-h-o-a (talk) 22:52, September 24, 2026 (UTC) @LadySophie17

- This is unrelated, but I have noticed that Li'l Massif's name is consistently misspelt Lil' Massif. If one takes a look in the game, one will notice that his name is spelt Li'l Massif, the apostrophe being before the second l instead of after. I request that someone change his page name to "Li'l Massif". It's Spelt W-h-o-a (talk) 20:41, September 24, 2026 (UTC)
