Course and Train[edit]

While Sunset Express is indeed a course in Paper Mario: Color Splash, it's also a train seen in other locations, such as Marmalade Valley and Kiwano Temple. Should we create two pages for them?--Mister Wu (talk) 17:46, 7 October 2016 (EDT)

Not sure if we need to create two articles. Why not just have a few sentences at the end, like, "the train is seen in other locations"? I don't know how notable it is in those appearances outside of a level in Color Splash, though. Sprite of Mario's icon in Mario Party DS It's me, Mario! (Talk / Stalk) 19:17, 7 October 2016 (EDT)
It's a bit complex to explain, but, apart from appearing already at Marmalade Valley, in Iggy's "chapter", in 2 of the courses of Larry's "chapter", Toad Trainworks and Tangerino Grill, the first time you pass you barely have anything to do. Only when the train arrives at those locations after you create the bridge in Kiwano Temple, you see the actual courses. Furthermore, Larry is the VIP inside that train. It's essentially a main element of Larry's "chapter" that you follow throughout that part. You can see the playthrough to better understand its role. Maybe a split is excessive, but at least create two separate sections, one for the course, one for the train that is seen in other courses and has an important role in Larry's "chapter", might be nice. --Mister Wu (talk) 20:01, 7 October 2016 (EDT)

Japanese name of the train[edit]

This subpage seems to suggest that the train itself has a different name from the course, namely 「見る鉄」 instead of 「サンセットエクスプレス」, am I reading this correctly?--Mister Wu (talk) 21:26, 25 October 2016 (EDT)

Split the train from the level[edit]

So, this matter has gone untouched for almost... 10 years?! Really? Has it been that long already?

Either way, the Sunset Express is a separate subject from the level named after it, it (apparently) seems to have a different name from the level in Japan, and this article only talks about the level itself, whereas information regarding the train is scattered across various pages about the "orange" region.

I believe it is time we either finally considered giving the train its own page, or find a better way of discussing the train on this page without solely focusing on its role in this level.

I've included a few different options, depending on what may, or may not, qualify as wiki policy. Perhaps it's a few too many, but I wanted to make sure I properly covered all the different outcomes that could come of this.

Support: Split the train, train receives identifier.[edit]

  1. Conductor Wandering Poplin (talk) I believe this one is the most in line with wiki policy.
  2. SuperPassenger18 (talk) This makes the most sense to me.
  3. Yoshi18 (talk) Tertiary choice.

Support: Split the train, level receives identifier.[edit]

  1. Conductor Wandering Poplin (talk) Secondary choice. I doubt this will be the result that ends up succeeding though.
  2. Camwoodstock (talk) Personally, this is what we'd err on the side of, which we feel might be kinda unpopular? As far as we've been able to tell (we could be missing something here), this is the first time a level set on a vehicle has been split from the vehicle itself (obvious checks for Excess Express and S.S. Chuckola reveal both are merged without fuss), and the closest you get is the Toy Train for Shy Guy's Toy Box, which is its own weird edge-case. So, with nothing else to really fall back on, we mostly default to "what's more present in the game itself?", and with that in mind, we feel like giving priority to the train itself, while giving the level set on it the (level) identifier, makes the most sense. Sunset Express as a vehicle is more prominent throughout the game than it is as a single level, and doing it this way is roughly in line with how we handle other such vehicles like the Toy Train, or even more general stuff like the Koopa Clown Car.
  3. Yoshi18 (talk) Secondary choice. Per Camwoodstock.
  4. EvieMaybe (talk) per Camwoodstock

Support: Split the train, both receive identifiers, original article becomes disambiguation page.[edit]

  1. Yoshi18 (talk) Primary choice. This one makes the most sense to me. Most pages that have the same name use identifiers.

Oppose: Don't split the train, fix up the article instead.[edit]

Comments: All aboard!![edit]

In regards to Mario's comment from (almost) 10 years ago, I will state that this train has story-relevant roles at the places it stops, and its information is currently scattered across multiple articles which are all trying to cover different subjects. The Sunset Express also appears in multiple different levels over the course of the game, unlike other trains with stages named after them, such as the Star Express or the Derailed Express. Wandering Poplin (talk) 02:41, January 9, 2026 (EST) We probably don't need separate oppose options for "fixing up the article" and not. It goes without saying that the article should be "fixed up" whatever passes. Hewer (talk · contributions · edit count) 03:59, January 9, 2026 (EST)

I thought so too, I only included it just in case there were any "The page is fine as it is" arguments. Either way, It's been removed now. Wandering Poplin (talk) 12:28, January 9, 2026 (EST)

Silly question is the idea that...

  • If "train receives identifier" wins, we get "Sunset Express" for the level and "Sunset Express (train)" for the train?
  • If "level receives identifier" wins, we get "Sunset Express" for the train and "Sunset Express (level)" for the level?

Camwoodstock-sigicon.png~Camwoodstock ( talk contribs ) Camwoodstock-sigicon2.png 13:20, January 9, 2026 (EST) Slightly less silly question, if "both receive identifiers, original page becomes redirect" wins, which of the two pages will the original page redirect to? And if the original page becomes a redirect to either of these anyway, then what is exactly the point of giving both of them identifiers? Wouldn't it make (more) sense if the original page becomes a disambiguation page instead of a redirect? ArendLogoTransparent.pngrend (talk) (edits) 13:52, January 9, 2026 (EST)

@Arend Good point. I must've accidentally used the wrong term when I started writing this. The proposal has now been updated to match. Wandering Poplin (talk) 14:56, January 9, 2026 (EST)

@Camwoodstock Yes, that's the idea. My apologies if the writing didn't make it clear. Wandering Poplin (talk) 14:56, January 9, 2026 (EST)
