The player has to rotate the system to move the platforms and make Mario avoid the multiple enemies coming for him. Lifts appear in ''[[The Super Mario Bros. Movie]]'', using a design based on their design in ''Super Mario 3D Land'' and ''Super Mario 3D World''. The main differences are that the majority of the wide faces of a lift have a glassy reflective texture, and that the indents in the corners of the wide faces are removed.

In [[Toad Town]], lifts are present across the city. Some of them go up structures, while others move horizontally between structures. They are associated with construction work, often appearing in such contexts. Some lifts are positioned behind boom arm operated gates. When [[Mario]] and [[Toad]] run across Toad Town on their way to [[Peach's Castle]], Mario has some trouble moving across one pair of horizontally floating lifts.

Lifts are also present in the [[Training Course]]. When these lifts are stood on, the holes between the yellow portions glow. Three of Mario's failed runs at the course involve a specific lift that floats horizontally and moves back and forth. In the first, Mario jumps to the lift but misses and falls. In the second, Mario's jump goes too far, so he lands on the lift but slides off. He crashes back first into a following row of [[Donut Block]]s and falls. The third attempt has him successfully use the lift to cross the gap and land on the first of the Donut Blocks in the row, but he takes too long to celebrate his success which causes the Dount Block to fall while he is standing on it. All three of these attempts happen one after the other in a montage, with the lift's position staying consistent across the montage cuts.

Lifts are among the [[Mushroom Kingdom]] objects transported to [[Brooklyn]] following a [[Bomber Bill]] exploding in the [[Warp Zone]], The lifts are scattered across the ground, and appear to be non-functional.

For many of them, this is apparent with the inclusion of {{ruby|リフト|Rifuto}} ("Lift") in their Japanese name, which is not always carried over during localization. Most derived lifts are suspended in the air and move, either on their own or when a player character steps on them.
