Because they are different: the former is an in-game sprite, and the latter is actually an artwork. It seems that there could have been an artwork for the other Spaces, although those deleted files can no longer be restored. I would be disappointed if those replaced images actually were artworks. Even if an artwork and sprite may look similar to each other, one shouldn't replace the other.

Another example is the artwork and screenshot. Sure, they show the same thing. And even if the quality of the artwork is less favorable than the screenshot, we should still keep both versions available.

I have a few doubts about it being artwork. I think you are relying on the copyright tag too much ({{art}}). Rarely, I find the wrong copyright tag being used on the ~70,000 images this site hosts. I think it was a badly taken screenshot (such as File:Grodus-x-pic.jpg) that has been cropped. If the image were indeed art but was scanned from the instruction manual or something, OK, legitimate claim made by you, but would saving a terrible picture be worth it? If you see Gallery:Mario Party 6#Orbs, there are artworks there are definite artworks there of similar size quality. There seems to be too many of them to come from the instruction manual: I think it has more likely come from a game guide. I don't think the image ahould be deleted for the sole reason of poor quality: a larger and better quality version may be reuploaded in the future by someone who realizes that we are hosting a poor image, and they may a better one on hand.

Well then, checking Mrbenio's uploads, no source was given. I doubt he logs into MarioWiki because his contributions have ceased in 2007 so there is no way to ask him where it came from. Thanks for confirming that, A51. Could you possibly upload or link to the page(s) which show the space artworks? I just want to have an idea on what was deleted back in 2012.

To be frank, I don't think these extremely low-quality JPGs serve any use in the wiki, especially when compared to official rips of the game that look extremely similar in presentation. I mean, if you find official artwork that's clear and high quality, then we can reupload them. But if you must, there is a pdf for the instruction manual out there.
