Egg Pawns are a common variety of robots created by Dr. Eggman in the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise, making their first appearance in Sonic Heroes. Egg Pawns frequently appear in the Mario & Sonic series, debuting in the Wii version of Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games.
In early Mario & Sonic installments, Egg Pawns appear in various Dream Events, most commonly as obstacles, but they have sometimes had other roles. In the Wii version of Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games, a pair of Egg Pawns appear as obstacles on the track in Dream Race, moving at a slow speed. In Dream Race, colliding with an Egg Pawn will make it explode, temporarily stunning the character and slowing their speed, though the Egg Pawn will respawn shortly afterward. In the Nintendo DS version of Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games, regular Egg Pawns appear as targets in Dream Shooting, as well as a variety with a shield requiring several shots to destroy. A giant Egg Pawn with a shield is a final boss for the event, requiring numerous hits to become defeated, but awards a larger point score to whoever dealt the finishing attack. In Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games, Egg Pawns appear as basic obstacles in both the Individual and Team versions of Dream Alpine and the Individual and Team versions of Dream Snowboard Cross, where they cause the player to fall over and lose speed when hit. The Egg Pawns can be destroyed if they hit by a character under the effects of the Super Star. Egg Pawns also appear in the second segment of the Sonic World version of Dream Figure Skating, where the characters jump from Springs to defeat them during the routine. In the Nintendo DS version of Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games, Egg Pawns are obstacles Extreme Snowboarding, acting identically as in the Wii version. In the Wii version of Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games, Egg Pawns appear as an enemy in Dream Fencing, where they will periodically appear and run around the stage, and characters will lose some of their health if they are hit by the Egg Pawns, but they can be defeated by a single thrust.
In more recent Mario & Sonic installments, Egg Pawns have a few passive roles in some of the regular Olympic events. In the Nintendo 3DS version of Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games, Egg Pawns appear in Handball, where they throw the balls at the goal which the player must defend, and Football, where one appears as the goalie and another appears as a defender depending on the player's performance. In the Nintendo 3DS version of Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, Egg Pawns appear in Football and Football Plus, as the teammates for Jet and Shadow, although Shadow has a special armored variety, which previously appeared in Sonic Colors. In addition, both events include an Egg Pawn as one of the goalies. Aside from Football and Football Plus, there is an Egg Pawn in 110m Hurdles Plus, where it operates the mechanical hurdles. In the Wii U version of Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, differently colored Egg Pawns appear as a selectable set of three extra teammates for Rugby Sevens and Duel Rugby Sevens, and as a selectable goalie for Football and Duel Football. In Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020, Egg Pawns return as goalies in Football and as extra teammates in Rugby Sevens if the team's captain is a Sonic character, where they are colored either red or blue depending on which team they are on.
Egg Pawns also appear in some minigames. In the Nintendo DS version of Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games, Egg Pawns are enemies for the player to hit in Shoot!, and as a character to be sorted in Conveyor Belt. In Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020, Egg Pawns are enemies in several of the story mode minigames.
There are some unlockable items based on Egg Pawns, including a Mii outfit in the Wii version of Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games, Mario & Sonic at the Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games (their only form of appearance in the game), and in the Wii U version of Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games as well as an obtainable badge in Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games. In the Wii U version of Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, like the other outfits, the Egg Pawn outfit has to be collected in two separate head and body parts.
In the Story Mode for the Nintendo 3DS version of Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games, an Egg Pawn appears in the bonus episode Junior, Super Hero?, where it and an Egg Flapper initially appear to attack Omochao and a Chao, only to be defeated by Bowser Jr.
