High Quality Uploads

Hey, great uploads! I'm loving the screenshots you're adding to this wiki. Please do more. :D Icon showing how many lives Mario has left. From Super Mario 64 DS. It's me, Mario! (Talk / Stalk) 23:20, 19 November 2015 (EST)

To be honest, I wasn't sure if my uploads were approvable because of the drastic increase in file size. I'm glad someone sees my high quality uploads as something good. I could go even higher but my computer is crap and I don't have anything beyond a 1600x900 monitor. The resolution of the captures are really causing Dolphin Emulator to run slow for me (2.5x Native). Even 1x Native can get sluggish at times. If I had more powerful hardware, it wouldn't be such a problem. Oh well. I am at least providing some much needed quality images this Wiki needs for Super Mario Galaxy (and Super Mario Galaxy 2 too when I get around to playing that through Dolphin :P). :D --Wildgoosespeeder (talk) 23:43, 19 November 2015 (EST)
The more increase in file-size means better quality the better for the wiki, I say. Well I'm glad someone's going through the trouble of playing a platformer especially on a slower computer to upload high quality screenshots. The games can run frustratingly slow so I understand where you're coming from. Keep up the good work! BabyLuigiFire.png Ray Trace(T|C) 00:47, 20 November 2015 (EST)
Slower frame rates do help getting more precise screenshots though. :P Anyways, it's nice to see my work is going appreciated. It's a nice change of pace hearing positive remarks improving a Wiki. :D The last Wiki I tried to improve just had me being chewed out by moderators. The Wiki's organization and maintenance handling was a mess five years in the making. Tried to propose systems to help it out some to get it back on-track. Lukewarm response. :( This Wiki and Bulbapedia handle better. --Wildgoosespeeder (talk) 04:42, 20 November 2015 (EST)
Yeah about that slow emulation speed lol, we've worked with slower frame rates before; we had to work with 1-3 FPS sometimes! The payoff is that the results in button-mashing and reaction minigames in Mario Party are profound, and it one time lead us to discovering an easter egg. Anyway, despite what Baby Luigi (my identical twin sister) said, it might actually be ideal if you stick to native resolution, but there's no point going back and changing the resolution of the images. Don't let that discourage you, though, and you can continue your work as usual. Icon showing how many lives Mario has left. From Super Mario 64 DS. It's me, Mario! (Talk / Stalk) 15:23, 20 November 2015 (EST)
The way Dolphin handles screenshots, it's a pain to take things in 640x480 or 853x480 or whatever. The picture ends up being stretched and scaled to whatever size the window is to fit the frame. I have brought this up on the Dolphin bug tracker. The developers say the current screenshot code is a mess and they haven't gotten around to cleaning it up because of the fact. Also if I were to take their suggestion to get around the issue, the program crashes and restarts my display driver, for me at least. Long story short, it's a pain to take screenshots at the 1x native resolution and have the output screenshot be 640x480 or 853x480. It's better for me to do 2.5x native (1600x900). --Wildgoosespeeder (talk) 16:58, 20 November 2015 (EST)
All right, it's okay if you have to upload at bigger-than-normal resolutions, moreso if it's really the only reliable way to get higher-quality screenshots. Just continue what you're doing, and we'll be fine. Icon showing how many lives Mario has left. From Super Mario 64 DS. It's me, Mario! (Talk / Stalk) 19:40, 20 November 2015 (EST)

NICE!! A fellow uploader! Such work is always appreciated. If uploading images is your main interest. I can link you to a page with countless amount of low quality images. Not necessarily Wii games but all existing Mario games!--

It's probably best to automate inserting {{image-quality}} for JPEGs if the tag doesn't exist. Some JPEGs can't be replaced, such as alpha/beta screenshots, pre-release images, and other media that can't be replicated. PNGs are a different story as they require manual investigation if the image is good or not. I have flagged a few already. I don't consider myself a regular uploader. Too much work. Also my Mario game library is quite limited. I happen to be interested in Super Mario Galaxy 1/2 being played in Dolphin Emulator and looking into Super Mario Wiki seeing a lot of low quality imagery. :P --Wildgoosespeeder (talk) 19:52, 20 November 2015 (EST)
I'd reserve them for super-low quality and/or out-of-proportion images, but I suppose you can catalog them in your user page so we can find all the images in a neat little spot without sharing room with horrendous-quality images. Mail toad image

Just a small request, but can you re-position the Purple Toad in this screenshot so the flowers don't clip through his feet? I figured that the image may be more useful for cropping in the future (we have a lot of cropped images here too). Thanks! Icon showing how many lives Mario has left. From Super Mario 64 DS. I don't think it is possible. It seems like the Super Mario Galaxy 2's Mailtoad is bound to the ring of flowers. :( --Wildgoosespeeder (talk) 17:41, 22 November 2015 (EST)

RE: Cosmic Blooper.PNG

Hello, good job the high resolution image uploads. However, since the previous File:Cosmic Blooper.PNG has the complete area (unless you can upload better version), it's preferable to use that one. Alien Bunny Sprite.pngL151Onnanoko

I had a feeling someone would have a problem with it but I am not sure how to best capture all of it. I couldn't find a good angle to do so. The suggested angle seems to be during the intro before Mario flies in (it has black bars) and then the image was edited. I don't like editing screenshots relating to casual play, the original format the images were captured in as I was replacing them. Also I was trying to match articles like Dusty Dune Galaxy and Sea Slide Galaxy, previous articles I worked on to replace the images. --Wildgoosespeeder (talk) 23:09, 22 November 2015 (EST)
I just need to point out that both are good; one shows the entire planet, the other shows the relative scale between Mario and the planet, and it shows gameplay footage. I think the free look option in Dolphin can be used to zoom yourself out so you can see both Mario and the planet, and it's just illustrative purposes, so it's not necessarily cheating or modding the game to give wrong impressions. The pesky HUD might be there, though, I don't know... Icon showing how many lives Mario has left. From Super Mario 64 DS. It's me, Mario! (Talk / Stalk) 16:25, 23 November 2015 (EST)
Free Look it is as a final resort but it will be a separate image, similar in case to Sea Slide Galaxy. --Wildgoosespeeder (talk) 16:28, 23 November 2015 (EST)

RE: Input On Merges

I went offline before deleting the file, so that done. You can upload another image of the battle to replace on the page. About unused file, some users upload and forgets to add them into pages, some replace but didn't tag for deletion. As the description said, All files should be used in at least one page. Some are lying around waiting to be tagged with {{delete}} as well.

Well yes, but i figure there should another screenshot of the battle fight and conclusion, if you're fine with that.

RE:Super Mario Galaxy Uploads

The images I find are usually in .jpg format, so I figure that saving them as .png makes less sense. I don't have access to a computer strong enough to handle Dolphin Emulation, so I am unfortunately unable to make such high quality screenshots. If saving .jpgs as .pngs is more preferable anyways, then I will change my behaviour immediately. PidgeyIcon.pngRandomYoshi(TalkPMsC) 19:25, 22 December 2015 (EST)

Thanks! I've been having trouble with JPEGs lately; I'll take your advice and make them PNGs in the future if it doesn't cooperate. --Andymii (talk) 20:41, 26 December 2015 (EST)

Transparency

I would reccomend not adding transparency onto the health bar image as the after effects could look unprofessional and is mostly unnecessary. Great with the uploads though.NSY (talk)

Why can't' you just dump the textures on Dolphin Emulator and piece them together instead? BabyLuigiFire.png Ray Trace(T|C) 19:36, 27 December 2015 (EST)
That might work if you can pull it off actually. Wouldn't recommend using magic wand transparency though. NSY (talk)
I don't have the proper tools to make it happen nor do I know how to wield them properly. I just capture things in the final render. I'll let someone else sort out getting even more precise with the image in question. --Wildgoosespeeder (talk) 19:42, 27 December 2015 (EST)
Dumping textures come with official transparency; there won't be any need to use magic wand transparency. Besides, you can use feathering to make a transparency less blocky so it's not always a bad thing. BTW, you use Dolpin emulator, correct? BabyLuigiFire.png Ray Trace(T|C) 19:44, 27 December 2015 (EST)
I know how to enable the feature in the graphics settings. I'm moreso just supplying replacement game screenshots. That is what I am uploading. --Wildgoosespeeder (talk) 19:47, 27 December 2015 (EST)

Your use of image quality tags

I think you're a tad too liberal throwing it around to any picture that's a little less than ideal quality. Typically, the tag is saved for images that have horrible anti-aliasing, taken with a potato quality camera, or whatever, but some images you've put an image-quality tag on are acceptable quality, even though they're simply JPGs. Like, I think this image and this image do their jobs even if they're not perfect quality. Yes, lacking a tag doesn't mean that it can't be better, but the image quality tag is usually saved for noticeably bad images, just like how we don't tag rewrite on articles unless their quality is noticeably and jarringly bad. Don't take this as a discouragement to your contributions, I'm personally just stating my own thoughts. BabyLuigiFire.png Ray Trace(T|C) 20:05, 27 December 2015 (EST)

Well after I brought this up, my twin IRL informed me that she already has this discussion with you before. I really apologize for bringing this up again. I might talk about it in the General Discussions Wiki Collab board of the Marioboards though so I can get some discussion from others. BabyLuigiFire.png Ray Trace(T|C) 20:39, 27 December 2015 (EST)
Again, I'll probably bring it up on the forums regarding usage of the templates. But we probably don't need to break it up; a bad image is a bad image and the reasons parameter is already good enough to cover all cases an image can be a bad image. BabyLuigiFire.png Ray Trace(T|C) 20:51, 27 December 2015 (EST)

Beta Images

The correct category for pre-release images is Category:Pre-release and unused images, not (the now-obsolete) Category:Beta Images. Niiue (talk) 02:24, 30 December 2015 (EST)

I'll make sure to do it.

GIF vs. JPEG. vs. PNG

I am tagging images like File:Ss lozalttf.gif for a reason. PNG is better because it has a lot of advantages over GIF or JPEG. PNGs can be compressed quite a bit more.

Doubly irrelevant in this case - firstly, you're talking bytes, not even kilobytes. And secondly, by uploading a new image, you're doubling the amount of space taken up on the server. (Even "deleted" images aren't actually removed by default. They're recycle-binned for potential undeletion.)

They also allow for 24-bit true color (16,777,216-color) rather than 256-color.

Irrelevant in the case of NES/SNES/Game Boy/GBC images. (And once you get beyond flat-colour images, PNG filesize REALLY balloons rapidly, since the compression algorithms don't work particularly well with rapid variations, like photos or more complex screenshots)

I have noticed that the 256 color pallet is insufficient with some SNES images (colors are a bit off).

That's an artefact of the program used to save it rather than the format, and would be the case with an 8-bit PNG too. No SNES image is more than 8-bit colour provided you use a properly-set colourmap. (This is not the same thing as the SNES only being capable of producing 256 total colours. It just couldn't do more than 256 simultaneously. The Game Boy Color had a similar, but even more severe limitation of something like 60 simultaneous colours, IIRC.). - Reboot (talk) 19:39, 3 January 2016 (EST)

I am well aware that MediaWiki treats deletion more like an OS recycle bin than resetting the bytes that made up the image. The deletion I see here typically will at least prevent bandwidth consumption of the inferior image.

...but the image itself (9.78kb) is rarely going to be served. It's used on one page and in two categories. The page serves a 180px thumbnail - which is 18.8kb - (by default, you can adjust that in your settings). The categories serve 120px thumbnails (8.77kb). All of which are rescaled (and cached) by the server. That's going to happen *whatever* image you upload.

And, indeed, I notice you've resaved it as a PNG while I've been typing. And, sure, the file is smaller (I'm going to check the accuracy in a minute...), but you know the filesize of the thumbnail being served on List of Mario references in video games now? 32.27 kB! Holy pyrrhic victory, Batman! (The category image is ALSO bigger at 15.5kB)

There are more ultimate ways of deletion if server space is getting tight, like this. I have brought the server space issue to Henry Tucayo Clay (Talk) when I was accidentally tagging images that I have replaced that were being used by main articles and 'Shroom issues. He isn't that concerned that the storage limit has been reached or is close to being reached.

So why are you?

I don't know the intricate details of an SNES but what I do know is that we should supply images that have the least amount of impact on bandwidth consumption and storage space. For the screenshot you untagged, there are two issues: The image isn't 254x224 (NTSC) and it can be compressed further than the GIF can if it were in PNG format (PNG Monster works great for me).

So what you've done is replace it with a resave of the image which in both server space and bandwidth takes up MORE space in practice, even before you consider the fact that the "prior" image still exists and will continue to exist on the server even if "deleted", and which is no more accurate since you've, again, literally resaved the same image.

...you really haven't thought this through, have you? - Reboot (talk) 20:31, 3 January 2016 (EST)

Don't worry about it too much mate, disagreements and problems will happen, as editors are expected to deal with them. However, disagreements foster critical thinking and helps us improve how we handle things. I can very may as well say that how we run is mostly based upon debate, critical thinking, and disagreements, and anyone playing devil's advocate is being intellectual. You might want to discuss it further with us before you create a proposal though, since I already know around three people who disagree with what you want, but Tucayo seems to be enthusiastic about your idea. Re:Emulator images

It's sure mine (my sister (Baby Luigi (talk)) also uploads a huge deal of stuff, so she's available when you need her, too. I am, however, focused on some other Wii/GCN games, which includes New Super Mario Bros. Wii, Mario Golf: Toadstool Tour, Mario Power Tennis, Mario Kart: Double Dash!!, Mario Party 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, Mario Sports Mix, Mario Strikers Charged, Mario Superstar Baseball, Super Mario Strikers, and Super Smash Bros. Melee, and Mario & Sonic at the London Olympic Games. Neither Galaxy, however, are on the list, and I'm not sure where it sits in my priority list, but once I figure out how to make the game interesting, but not immediately apparent in photo, while I take pictures (like hacks disabling music), I'll get to it. Replaced JPG by PNG

I saw that your replaced JPG image, to PNG image. Just to say I upload a new Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam boxart in PNG since the old one (that I upload) was in JPG. Do you mind that I make the change on the pages where the old (JPG) is applied? As per courtesy, since edit snipping is not allowed here, so I need to ask you.--LudwigVon Sig.png(TALK) 00:01, 10 January 2016 (EST)

Sorry if you misunderstand me, my first language is not English (its French) and it is difficult for me to explain it. I saw you put replaced some images in PNG format. I upload a JPG image sometime before, then, I re-upload the image I had downloaded in JPG before, now in PNG. What I wanted to know, does it bother I replace the image in JPG who is still on some page to PNG Format? Because I think that was your job and as per courtesy I must ask you. Since edit sniping ( yes , only one p) is not allowed. Hope you can understand me.--LudwigVon Sig.png(TALK) 00:36, 10 January 2016 (EST)

Regarding the Take Better N64 Snapshots subpage

Nice, that looks like a nice tutorial. However, it seems that it is a bit too extreme. Sure, sometimes the 320px screenshots looks better than the 640px ones. But I think it's better not to stick to strict rules. You spelled it yourself when you upload over-resolutioned SMG images. It's overall better to go by it case-by-case. If the 640px looks high-quality enough then upload it, otherwise we can stick to the 320px.. Regarding the images used. I'm not sure what the admins are going to decide, but in all cases, you can always upload the images to external sites (like imagur and postimage) and use the direct link to put the images in the wiki... external image-linking is allowed everywhere aside from the mainspace and galleries.--

I'm actually going to do just April because the render shown isn't in this wiki or anywhere else I know of. But much thanks for the higher-res version! I'm actually going to attempt to crop it. Icon showing how many lives Mario has left. From Super Mario 64 DS. It's me, Mario! (Talk / Stalk) 01:04, 16 January 2016 (EST)

I removed the backgrounds from the sprites you requested. I refrained in File:Crystal Balls.PNG because I couldn't tell if the pink part is supposed to be removed or not. As for those Wario's Woods sprites, the color values for the black seem to blend with the background, so I can't accurately remove the background. I also haven't used PNG monster; maybe I'm a n00b, but the page isn't displaying properly unless I hit "view source". Yeah, I've said so already. I forgot. But after using and uploading File:MarioMSB.png as a guinea pig, I'll remember to compress them. At least, when I'm using this computer. I'm probably going to upload and edit using another computer tomorrow (provided I get that wireless keyboard and mouse working again!), and I'm not supposed to put too much programs in that one; I've already have Paint.NET installed, and I don't wish to install more stuff. But, thanks for that! Icon showing how many lives Mario has left. From Super Mario 64 DS. It's me, Mario! (Talk / Stalk) 03:21, 16 January 2016 (EST)
I've reuploaded the sprite. And from the sprite sheet you provided, the crop was actually poorly done; I could not make out the sparkles in the sprite, and the pinkish area IS supposed to be there. It makes it more confusing that the pink background's palette matches this pink palette so it appears to be the transparent part. Good thing we have a game rip or I would've removed the wrong parts, but even if I didn't do this, the sprite would be incorrect. Icon showing how many lives Mario has left. From Super Mario 64 DS. Images to be deleted

When adding a delete template to an image, please add the reasoning for it as well, using the template {{delete}}, as follows {{delete|reason}}. Remember, being unused is not enough of a reason to delete an image, only delete it if it was replaced, or utterly useless, if it can be implemented in an article, do that instead. Please revise all your past deletion tags--

User:MegadarderyUser talk:MegadarderyDashbot signature

05:09, 18 January 2016 (EST)

I have only seen the ones you have marked with tobedeleted, again, being unused is not a reason to mark an image for deletion, and if you don't have a reason to delete an image, don't mark it for deletion. It's common sense. Regarding my old message about screenshot resolution, your response didn't detail why high resolution screenshots are "bad". You just stated some facts.--
User:MegadarderyUser talk:MegadarderyDashbot signature
15:32, 18 January 2016 (EST)
It is confusing, but the vast majority of users use it when there is a proposal about deleting a page, which seems legit enough. It should only be used when there is a disagreement on whether to keep it or not. Again for the third time, If you don't have any reasons to delete an image, don't mark it. If you have proper reasons, but not absolutely sure, then post a comment in the talk page, and then tag it with the {{tobedeleted}}, If the image is about an uncovered subject, unused personal-image (you might also want to talk with it's owner, if he is not inactive) and replaced images, then you can safely add the {{delete}}.--

15:46, 18 January 2016 (EST)
...Which is much appreciated really, few of us used to dig it, I would dig it too If I wasn't extremely busy with tests. The tobedeleted template puts the image in the Requested for Deletion category: "[...] there is a discussion on whether they should be deleted or not." If this category was filled with unused images, it would lose it's purpose, besides the people who would care to dig this, have the same guts to dig this.--

PNG monstar

Even though using PNG monstar compresses the images and fasten the loading time, for small sprites it doesn't matter, and if the size difference is too minor (when compressing large images, say 1000 KB compressed to 950 KB), it's also not necessary, because it eats bandwidth space, and the effects are not noticeable, however if you are uploading an image, you can compress it before uploading and that would be appreciated, and if the PNG monstar can compress Huge images with a noticeable difference (say 1000 KB compressed to ~600 KB) then that is also appreciated.--

Stubs

Since you've brought this up on a couple of occasions, I'll explain to you directly that stubs are not necessarily short articles. A stub is simply an article that's lacking information. If an article has all the required information, it's not a stub even if the end result is short. If all of the information is on the wiki, it cannot be a stub unless something new comes out. Please take this into account. Hello, I'm Time Turner.

With the plethora of categories, templates, and general links in other articles, it's almost impossible for an article to fall by the wayside. Generally, subjects are split either because they have little connection to their originating article or because more focus and detail can be inserted if the subjects are given individual articles. It's up to the users to decide which articles should be split and which articles should be merged, whether that's through proposals or discussions. Hello, I'm Time Turner.

Emulators Guide

It's a go from the admin team, but these changes need to be made before turning it into an official page: There should be two sets of two images, since all four in a row will is way too wide (plus, it'll look better to have the images of the same dimensions separate). Then the overall footer should be turned into body text or even a pair of bullet points above the images, and the header can be ditched. Since there's room for expansion to involve more emulators, then one section per emulator would be best, with the intro just being an overall "use the native resolutions" statement, like we already have on MarioWiki:Image Use Policy. The title would also be changed but I'll take care of that. If theses changes are applied I can run this again by the staff. --TucayoSig.png The 'Shroom 13:48, 4 February 2016 (EST)

I'd love to help out but honestly it's very difficult to find the time to do so. For starters, I'm interested in writing a topic for the Wiki Collabs board on Marioboards on tips and stuff on dealing with 3D models in this wiki, as well as my own wiki projects I need to tackle. Re:Proposal

Funny, I was just going to contact you about getting quality screenshots. I've learned a bit recently that you stated that "it is better to hardmod a 3DS". I suppose you can provide some details here, specifically, setting up homebrew for you 3DS, since that can provide PNG quality screenshots.

As for the proposal, I have my reservations. I like idea of trying to sort through low-quality images, but I don't like some of the ideas. Icon showing how many lives Mario has left. From Super Mario 64 DS. It's me, Mario! (Talk / Stalk) 21:29, 9 April 2016 (EDT)

I believe 3DS for Homebrew requires an SD card? Is that the same as a flashcard or...? I've tried checking it out, but I have the latest firmware of 3DS, and it's the Old3DS. I do have a copy of Ocarina of Time 3D, so I'd like to try the OOThax exploit by directly writing raw saves to the card (my system has not been exploited before), but I think that requires PowerSaves or a 3DS save dongle, neither of which I have. Anyhow, I don't know much about that, but I'd like to try exploiting my 3DS. For the proposal, I typed... something. Icon showing how many lives Mario has left. From Super Mario 64 DS. It seems that my cautious stance remains. I've made another big comment, so have a look if you have time. Icon showing how many lives Mario has left. From Super Mario 64 DS. It's me, Mario! (Talk / Stalk) 18:18, 11 April 2016 (EDT)

Continuing on your points on the proposal. I'm seeing that it's going to be canceled, so I'm continuing a bit here. I provided your points here just for convenience, especially if we or any other user needs to refer to it for any reason. Also, you're very welcome. I appreciate your receptiveness to feedback and going through the lengths to discuss about this. Often times, proposers don't really comment on my concerns of the issues, and that can be annoying sometimes.

  • Images such as File:SMG2 dark mario.jpg I can definitely agree with you do not need {{image-quality}} but an image such as File:3DMARIO.png does need {{image-quality}}.
  • Honestly, I didn't expect more work was to be done to my proposal. Seeing the response so far, I may just as an admin for approval to cancel the proposal and postpone it to a later date.
  • OK, I guess removal of {{Convert to SVG}} is in order but I am not 100% sure it should be removed.
  • I'm 50:50 with PNG vs. JPEG use for screenshots. JPEG would definitely not be acceptable for screenshots of sprite-based games (such as NES, SNES, GB, GBC, and GBA games as well as some games that don't utilize true 3D of N64, GCN, Wii, Wii U, DS, and 3DS games). Compression for those screenshots would almost always be lower in the PNG format than the JPEG format. PNG is great for solid colors while JPEG is great for images with shading. I just default to PNG almost always because it is a very easy format to work with. My experiences with JPEG, I have to fiddle around with compression settings to not be too high in file size while the image doesn't look like it suffers from JPEG artifacting. It's usually a pain for me to work with JPEGs.
  • I feel that personal lists risk being exclusionary and obscure to regular users. RAP (talk)'s project failed mostly from what I heard (only up to 1/10th of the images were replaced over the course of a few years and there are still images in poor quality). Tagging an image that could be better is more up-front about it, increases replacement request exposure, and invites people who don't know about the personal lists to contribute better images to the Wiki because that is how the tag functions by design and implementation. I think I was able to replace more images by the tagging method than the personal list method.
  • Wow. I wished those details were included in each of the template's <noinclude></noinclude> code. I remember Henry Tucayo Clay (talk) proposing something about {{construction}} being used incorrectly (something about articles truly being informal). I could never really fully understand what the proposal was asking because the tag itself had a lot of subjectivity surrounding its use. If the tag's description had what you described to me is its proper use, I'm sure his proposal wouldn't need to have been proposed.

Thanks for all your helpful feedback. You and Henry Tucayo Clay (talk) have been the most helpful. --Wildgoosespeeder (talk) (Stats - Contribs) 19:17, 11 April 2016 (EDT)

I also agree on the use of {{image-quality}} tags here. I didn't necessarily say that files like File:3DMARIO.png do not need a tag, but that there should be more leeway on deciding whenever pre-release stuff should get a tag or not. But, a potato image is still a potato image, and that's what the 3DMARIO image is, so I have no problems tagging that one.

That's why prior discussion is important. We can settle on terms and work toward a clearer goal. I always thought this proposal would be a big undertaking, though. It's essentially recategorization and trying to go through all images in the wiki to tag or to maintain tags.

I think it should be removed, to be honest. As Megadardery said, it's an old template that was applied to small sprites that, when placed in galleries, become huge and blurry and otherwise look hideous. The .svg format allows scaling without any loss, so there was a small push for .svg sprites. But, since wiki software was updated to scale these sprites more appropriately, this template is just a relic. Its only use I see is inviting users to convert a .png logo into an .svg when that kind of practice is discouraged. Specifically, the means of converting to .svg itself, which is tracing over the .png. How tracing works is that Adobe Illustrator sees an image and then calculates where the strokes should be, their width, their color, and others. Since it's not perfect, you get a logo that looks slightly off from the original. It's why those emblems I showed you had to be reuploaded. They're inaccurate and therefore misleading. Just as we don't allow users to recreate sprites based on low-quality pre-release video footage (which results in an inaccurately constructed sprite with an inaccurate palette), we don't allow trace versions of .png logos (even if the .png logo highly resembles vector art).

Personal lists may risk being overlooked but it's no good if you don't make any attempt. RAP's project may have gone unnoticed, but the deal isn't done. Not at all. You can revive projects and they may get more attention and even get going again. This is exactly what happened with proposal archives, I brought up the issue, found out that it was actually an old, forgotten issue, reminded the admins (and RAP coincidentally, as it's another one of RAP's forgotten projects!) and we pushed it to make it a thing, and here it is. I hope this is inspiring. And even if it gets little attention, just keep trying and just work hard. I don't think personal lists are that much more hidden than maintenance categories, to be honest. For what I've seen, it's usually the experienced users on gnomework that handles categories and stuff, not "normal" users. Keeping useful information in userspace isn't that "out there".

Yeah, I actually opposed it on the grounds that it arbitrarily restricts the template, and it got pretty contentious, but I think it worked out in the end. Icon showing how many lives Mario has left. From Super Mario 64 DS. It's me, Mario! (Talk / Stalk) 21:33, 11 April 2016 (EDT)

hello

Hello Wildgoosespeeder? Did you mention that many images lack a game category over the years of MarioWiki existing? When I was uploading a bunch of The Thousand-Year Door screenshots, I felt it would be nice to categorize them, but didn't because I didn't know there was such a need. So I thought it would be nice to make it possible for the uploader to mark which game or games the image belongs to, aside from choosing the license, directly at uploading time. What do you think about the idea? A gossip-loving Toad (talk) 00:52, 10 April 2016 (EDT)

My old image replace-a-thon pages

Hello, I noticed that there are two links to one of my subpages, one involving a project on replacing images of questionable quality which hasn't been touched since 2013 or 2014, and my detailed PNG Monster page. Thank you for taking on this abandoned project, saying as a prominent image uploader in the earlier years of the wiki. When I made the project, I manually scanned all the images in MarioWiki and categorize which game it came from and what type of quality problem to do deal with the image. I would like to help you and potentially others finish up this old project, but I'm not sure if I have the time to do so right now. Keep at it! RAP.pngRAP... 04:44, 11 April 2016 (EDT)

Image-quality tags

In all honesty, bloating that category with more and more images is bothering me more and more, as it means more things to sift through, and more to be said on how lax the guidelines are when it comes to these tags: there isn't anything allowing image-quality tags to be used for virtually everything, but there's nothing forbidding it either. The tag didn't work like this before, and now it has changed mostly because of the lack of a written guideline. I was pretty close to making a TPP shutting down the current use of the image templates but my twin made me realize that I should probably hold it off until your proposal is finished developing. Besides, maybe you probably should stop tagging it; your future proposal will probably create a separate split of image-quality templates (that one idea that I like; we have different templates for different types of bad writing, so why not several different ones for different images, as they have different purposes and qualities) and I think you might have to do some extra work in the future, replacing the general image-quality one with a more specialized one? I think you should focus on ironing out your proposal, then you can tag the images that have problems.

Maybe I'm counting chickens (or geese for that matter ha ha ha) before they hatch but I do fully support on the idea of different image-quality template to communicate image problems better. BabyLuigiFire.png Ray Trace(T|C) 22:39, 13 April 2016 (EDT)

Sounds fair enough. Actually, I think it's mostly my fault for this. I did forgot the past conversation we had about this. BabyLuigiFire.png Ray Trace(T|C) 22:56, 13 April 2016 (EDT)
Don't worry, things will settle down soon. It's just that this idea is new for someone who has been working in this wiki for nearly 7 years now, been using the image-quality template for this long, and it's hard to adjust to new concepts like this. There's no harm intended in anything we did, lol, we just want this wiki to be a quality source of information. As for those images, that's perhaps a possibility. The Cheep-Cheep and Boo sprite isn't an ideal frame, as some other images on this wiki, that could use an idle first frame rather than a random frame. For the rest, I'm not sure about those, as it's difficult to acquire game-rips. I mean, few of us are game hackers. BabyLuigiFire.png Ray Trace(T|C) 23:12, 13 April 2016 (EDT)

some suggestions

Categorizing thousands of images is a huge job, right? When I was doing a similar job which involves updating hundreds of redirects, I wrote a script to automate the job, as this picture shows. Since you're good at scripting I suppose you can do something similar to speed up your work of categorizing the pictures. To get a list of the pictures that lack a category by game, I have a second method which I want to share with you: download the description page of all images via Special:Export, and use regex to search for ones that lack \[\[Category\:[^\]]+? Images\]\]. This is easier than trying to get a list of them by first removing the license categories and then looking inside Special:UncategorizedFiles, and it gives the whole list at once. If you do create a list in this way please share it with me and I might be able to help categorize them too. This kind of job is always fascinating to me -- it's like looking for the lost star childs in the universe and giving them a home. But I'm a busy these days so good luck to you. I've actually started working on categorizing some images, and I've managed to shave off a little under 50 files. For the general purposes of this proposal, I've fixed the issue with the youtube thumbnail template, the usage is available here, and the code is here. I've removed the center tag because it was unnecessary and it shouldn't be used anyway. Paper Mario screenshots

Sorry about being so egotistical last time. Uh... a few questions:

  1. Do you have a good way to find all the Paper Mario screenshots on the wiki? Using the current category system, I haven't been able to find a way to show the intersecting part of Category:Game screenshots and Category:Paper Mario Images. It seems that the existing pics on the wiki are not much used. For example, File:Dane T..PNG is used only on the "Dane T." article but it could be used to decorate the gallery "Toad Town". If there's a tag system like the one on Twitter where we could say, er, "#Mario and #Parakarry delivering a #letter to #DaneT in #ToadTown #PaperMario #screenshot" and have a filter system for those tags, that would be nice.
  2. As for Paper Mario screenshots, the black borders that arise from the ones taken from a screenshots doesn't look good in ordinary articles. Is it a good idea to crop them?

A gossip-loving Toad (Talk) 23:54, 30 April 2016 (EDT)

By the way, can you take a look at the picture on the "K64" article and decide whether to add it to Toad Town#Gallery? My browser crashes every time displaying a page with that image on so I'm not able to do this myself. A gossip-loving Toad (Talk) 00:58, 2 May 2016 (EDT)

People's work on this wiki generally needs to be more recognized so I feel like I should do something on my own, because I really like the effort you're putting into gathering screenshots; that's something that requires serious dedication that not many can pull off. So I guess I'll just give you an unofficial barnstar. There's no official system on this wiki for various good reasons because we don't want people fishing for compliments and likes but eh, I do it because why not, there needs to be more appreciation for editors like you in general.

Think of it me being very thankful that you're here. Unfortunately, this is the most I can do to recognize your edits, but a little thanks is good once in a while, huh? BabyLuigiFire.png Ray Trace(T|C) 23:44, 1 May 2016 (EDT)

So about the.... everything.

So yeah, change. I'm usually against change unless it actively improves how things work. And I actually oppose it if it has been established since forever and no one has had any troubles with it. But hey, that's my two cents on the subject. I'm pretty sure other people may or may not support the changes. There is no plenty at all for constantly making proposals (as long as it follows the rules, obviously). Even if the proposals fail, it's good to get your opinion out there. As for the idea we have on our hand right now, here is my detailed opinion.

The drop down is going to be so extensively long, because the Mario series is so expensive in term of games, it's not just going to be 2 or 3 choices. It's going to be a lot a lot longer, thus not helping users in any shape or form, that's why such an idea will not work. A better idea is to add check-boxes for the additional categories, the two on the top of my mind right now are Beta Images and Glitch Images. That's something I support. As for the alternative way to deal with images games, here is my thoughts: you can modify the {{aboutfile}} (of course you need a proposal for such an edit, especially because it was rejected before.) to add an option for the game. I kinda don't like this idea because first you have no place to put the game name in other than the description, and if that's the case, then why bother in the first place when you can just put it in the first parameter and call it a day. The option can also add the category automatically, but then we run into the issue of games that have categories not matching their actual name. And dealing with that is just going to be an unnecessary additional step so why bother in the first place?, but even if we are going to do that, we shouldn't fix all the previous images, for starters it would really clutter the recent changes, and hell, the time you spend on doing this trivial task should definitely be spent somewhere more important, even if outside the wiki. There are like 70 thousands files, tell me that it is a good idea. Using a bot wouldn't work neither, because there are inconsistencies all over the place in the file pages.

Yeah, inconsistencies, a word I really hate to see... anywhere, except the file pages. Why? because readers are more likely to just refer to the file pages when they want to see a larger version of the thumbnail they saw on a page. And I believe it's unusual to just surf the images. And even if they do, we usually have our trusty {{aboutfile}} neatly organized for their convenience (and if it is not, you can fix that issue). However, the real articles have much much higher priority than file pages. These are what represents us as an encyclopedia. The images are just that, images, not separate articles. And we as a wiki have a lot of maintenance to do, the last thing we need to add to that pile of work is extremely minor problems here and there. Heck, one of the minor inconsistencies we have on our real articles is the order of the categories. Tell me that someone cared.

Ignored problems by the community are usually deemed not to be problems. And you should never try to invent problems over fixing already existing ones. The only way to change an already established such practice is to run through the proposals and see. If your idea is accepted than yeah, go ahead and do it. Not just say that people don't like change. They usually have a reason.

Finally, and sorry if this comes out rude, if you are responding to me, try to address as many points as possible from my message, instead of sticking to a particular point and answering as if you were talking to a naive. It just makes me not wanting to detail my thoughts.--

Like I said, it's not considered to be a worthwhile issue. That is, the {{image-quality}} issue, and the drop-down categories issue.. Believe me, it is not going to work. Have you ever checked the list of games we have? This won't help most people, especially those who already break the aboutfile template. Some just rush to upload an image, and in that case, the best way to deal with it is: 1. Informally warn the user to correctly format aboutfile and add the category of the appropriate game. 2. Add the category yourself to fix the problem. Yes it's an issue, but there is no way to deal with it currently. Even the aboutfile fix would probably cease to work because many new users skim over it. Another idea would be to update MediaWiki:Uploadtext, but that will probably also fail because of the same reason. There is no solution.
Ok as for the {{image-quality}}, here is a good idea. If you stumble upon semi-bad images (the ones warranting templates in your opinion), just try to fix them. If you can't, probably no one will. And if that's the case then another template is just unnecessary.
The check boxes I mentioned are only for glitch and beta images. Other than that, you will have to add the image yourself.--

About the userpage image

Until recently, the userbox that The 'Shroom offered used a hotlinked image, which is what the large majority of users are currently using. I'll change my userbox ASAP, but just thought I'd clarify. Hello, I'm Time Turner.

Bot

Did you really make a bot here? BabyLuigiFire.png Ray Trace(T|C) 01:30, 21 May 2016 (EDT)

If you want to create a bot specifically for editing, shouldn't you create a separate account for it, like, say, "Goosebot" or something? MarioWiki hasn't been hot on bot creation so its policies are a bit murky. Regardless, I've always been intrigued by bot creation and I'd like ways to implement one as well, that's why I asked :) BabyLuigiFire.png Ray Trace(T|C) 01:40, 21 May 2016 (EDT)

You should probably request bot status so you can mark your edits as such and not flood recent changes. Currently it is quite easy to mark an edit as minor and go unnoticed for three years. Props for using a bot for this though. Lakituthequick.png Lakituthequick 16:50, 21 May 2016 (EDT)

I don't know how common that is, but there might be some. I'm also aware of the option to hide minors, but you hide all minor edits with that.
What I'm talking about is the ability to add a bot-flag to an account (yours in this case), which allows your bot to mark your edits as made by bot, which is like a minor edit, but separate (notice the hide/show bot edits option next to hide/show minor edits). I believe a bureaucrat can add that.
Lakituthequick.png Lakituthequick 17:28, 21 May 2016 (EDT)

He/she obviously made a bot. How else can you perform 9,789 edits it just 30 days? I mean, unless you do this for a living. But I don't think anyone does that, except maybe Porplemontage. AwesomeLuigi97 (talk)

Bot work

I noticed you made a number or edits to replace files as a bot under your account and I'm wondering, how exactly do you do that? I was thinking of using a bot as well, mainly to add categories to files or fix mseed-up about file templates (small things like that which are the main edits I make and could be probably done by a bot) but I'm not too familiar with Mediawiki and its interface (I saw your comments on Porplemontage (talk)'s talk and he pointed you to Mediawiki source code for a bot.) --driftmaster130 (TalkEdits) 14:48, 21 May 2016 (EDT)

Actually nvmd, I just saw Baby Luigi's comment above and your reply on her talk. I did look at Porple's reply and I still don't understand how to set one up, etc. (again, not too good with Mediawiki) could you maybe try to explain that? --driftmaster130 (TalkEdits) 14:51, 21 May 2016 (EDT)
OK, thanks. --driftmaster130 (TalkEdits) 15:19, 21 May 2016 (EDT)

reply about file categorization

I think that just a message that says "You can optionally add game categories with [[Category:XXX Images]], with XXX being the game titles (full list here)" would be enough. When I uploaded those PMTTYD Star Piece screenshots, I added the category stuff next to the aboutfile. If you want it to be placed at the bottom of the wikicode you have to manually do that in the description page. The MediaWiki doctrine is that everything is to be stored and manipulated as plain text, which I don't think is a good "data structure" for organizing images, but we have to live with it so I don't like to put too much effort into it. About the "Image:" thing, searching for "[[Image:" will miss a lot of cases such as

<gallery>
Image:xxx.png
</gallery>

or, even worse,

{{somestupidtemplate
| ...
| map = Image:xxx.png
| ...
}}

. --A gossip-loving Toad (Talk) 09:39, 25 May 2016 (EDT)

Thanks for the regex idea, but gallery codes like

<center>
<gallery>
File:xxx.jpg|''Mario Party
Image:yyy.png| ''Mario Party 2
zzz.png|''Mario Party 3'' (blah blah)
</gallery></center>

are best taken care of by a human and I pretty much enjoy the process so I don't want to get it automated. I would appreciate it if you mass-replace "Image:" with "File:", though, since the exceptional cases are rare and can be found by grepping in advance for "'Image:' preceded by a non-'[' character or line start" over the whole wiki and then looking into the results for English sentences. RE: OGG Files

Some of the files can be uses in other pages they're preferred. Video file can be deleted, or be used as ref source.

Most of these files don't need to be deleted, cause they are linked to other pages despite that not being shown in the file page. Alien Bunny Sprite.pngL151Onnanoko

RE: Personal Images

Thank you for letting me know. I have been working on my userpage for the past 6-7 hours, and I had them in there as soon as they were uploaded. I just haven't created my userpage yet so that is why there appears to be no usage. Both images will be used. At this point in time, I am pretty close to having it done so rest assured they'll be used within the day.

Whoops

As I said, got GMT+1 and GMT-1 mixed up, thought it was 11pm rather than 1am.

But why did you put the {{delete}} on the moved-back talk page? You realise you can move over a redirect that hasn't been edited, yes? - Reboot (talk) 18:47, 31 May 2016 (EDT)

PNG Monster alternative

What about having Porplemontage's servers compress these PNG files upon uploading instead of having users apply PNG Monster? I'm not sure every user has Microsoft Windows to run it and haven't found something equivalent in Linux's imagemagick. GIMP might be able to do it but not every Linux distribution has this bundle. Hey! Ohh, I'm sorry about that, I'll definitely pay attention to it next time. Thanks for the heads up! Guiminghe (talk) 22:36, 27 June 2016 (EDT)

Recent images

It's always good to see high-quality images on the wiki, but I noticed that for your most recent ones (such as File:SPM Thwomp.png and File:SPM Cherbil.png), you only listed the game as the source. For future reference, it's good to list who originally took the image, even if it's you, as well as how the image was obtained and whether or not any modifications were made to the image or the game when the image was taken. Hello, I'm Time Turner. 23:08, 29 June 2016 (EDT)

I was mostly talking about having a form of accountability. I've seen plenty of people who upload sprites and screenshots from other sites while not citing any sources at all or broadly citing the website that they got it from and not the person who originally took the screenshot or ripped the sprite. Simply writing "taken by uploader" or something might save a whole lot of trouble later down the line. Hello, I'm Time Turner. 23:21, 29 June 2016 (EDT)
Good to know, but if, say, someone wanted to use your image outside of the wiki and wanted to give you credit, they'd have to ask you directly to find that out. I'm a bit of a broken record, but it's generally for the best to write down who the artist of an image is, even if that artist is you. Hello, I'm Time Turner.

Licensing Sprite/Screenshot

A quick question I noticed a few PMSS images have the screenshot licensing but they're now Sprites, would be okay or a violation to change it to the current corresponding license. Super Paper Mario promotional artwork: Mimi The RPG Gamer (talk) (edits) Dimentio 00:16, 30 June 2016 (EDT)

Plural redirects

Yes, I'm quite aware on how to pluralize links, but I haven't found any rules that recommended against plural redirects. There's quite a few of them for the enemies, so what makes the ones I created any different. --Zootalo (talk) 19:52, 2 July 2016 (EDT)

Response

Hey there. In case the page is not on your watchlist, I have replied to your question here.

Re: Response + 'Shroom images

No worries. I will try and get to most of your other questions, too. Often I feel that category doesn't get enough attention.

Great to hear that you are keepin' a close eye on the unused files. The coding was no credit of mine, a former admin on the forums wrote it for me. I have little expertise in such coding. But I knew it was a problem to have 'Shroom images tossed among the unused files page. They should be kept separate from that maintenance category. The original idea was to use the code on {{not-unused}}. Currently that template would have a sole use on CSS-linked images (which aren't many), due to its removal from 'Shroom images as well as the little File: trick that Glowsquid discovered on the talk page.

I understand what you're saying about the bandwidth stuff. Can the [[{{FULLPAGENAME}}|1x1px]] code go immediately after <div style="display: none;">[[{{FULLPAGENAME}}]]</div> at {{shroom-image}}, still between the <includeonly> tags?

Also, I've noticed that we share a close interest in the website's images. May I ask a request? I no longer have a copy of PNG Monster, and the download page now takes me to a nonsensical unicode minefield. If you have a working copy, could you arrange a download link for me? Such as through Dropbox or Onedrive, or something similar.

Thanks ya silly goose. I know it will be a pleasure working with you here.

'Shroom Spotlight Shokora (talk · edits) 18:23, 5 July 2016 (EDT)

Thanks for the instructions, I did it myself. By the way was there a way for you to get PNG Monster to me?
Another question: what do you think of the idea to make a proposal which decides whether we keep either artworks with a shadow, or artworks without a shadow? I haven't quite decided which one we should have over the other. But I've written some benefits of each one off the top of my head:
Replace the shadowless artwork with those that have a shadow: I would like to see us keeping the shadow, as it would aesthetically be the full and most complete version of the artwork.
The artwork with shadows be replaced by those that do not have a shadow: Artworks without a shadow are able to be cropped tighter, leaving less space around an image. The pixels of a shadow can extend out from the artwork, making it difficult to crop while being sure that the shadow has truly finishes. Also, tightly cropped art will appear clearer and larger within galleries, as well as infoboxes.
'Shroom Spotlight Shokora (talk · edits) 13:55, 6 July 2016 (EDT)
If it's possible (to optimize PNGs automatically), then it could be an idea. Waiting for something to upload could take twenty times as long, though.Especially if someone is uploading a giant artwork. Also even though the compression is lossless, could the colors possibly change? It should never be noticeable if you were compressing a sprite, but it might be easier to notice while compressing a large image.
Ah okay. I couldn't think of an example of the color changing, but I'm sure I've seen it happen before.
