MS-DOS was popular in the 1980's, acting as a primary operating system for businesses and personal computers. MS-DOS also has the ability to run programs. It was also the platform for which the original Windows line was designed for, which were operating environments running on top of DOS.

It was semi-succeeded by the Windows 9x line which consists of Windows 95, Windows 98, and Windows Millennium Edition which all integrated Windows with MS-DOS as one unified product. It was ultimately succeeded by the Windows NT line starting with the release of Windows XP in 2001. Several emulators for DOS (including DOSBox) are readily available for various home computers (including PC, Mac, and Linux) and mobile devices.
