Quotes "The Star Festival"?[edit]
I have noticed that the main melody line plays a melody that sounds extremely similar to "The Star Festival", which makes me think that they quoted "The Star Festival" for "Purple Comet". Specifically, the intro to "The Star Festival" (which is also reused in "Another Story" in Super Mario Galaxy 2) concludes with 8 notes, the latter 6 sound extremely similar to the melody line of "Purple Comet". I don't know a lot about music theory, but the melody line seems to be going for an "A-B-A-B" sequence, with the A part having the same sequence of notes as "The Star Festival", while the B part starts similarly but derives on the last 2 notes.
I think that this was more of an intentional choice than just a coincidence, specifically because Purple Comets are unlocked upon completing The Fate of the Universe for the first time, which makes Purple Comets resemble a new beginning vibe after returning to the Comet Observatory, not only mirroring how The Star Festival started the game, but also foreshadowing its full-circle moment later in the game, after The Fate of the Universe is completed as Luigi after collection all 120 Stars. Therefore, I think this is an intentional quoting of a leitmotif compared to just having the melody shared as a coincidence.
I would like to hear other's thoughts on this before I add this to the pages. Listen to "The Star Festival" at the 10 second mark and "Purple Comet" at the 6 second mark. I think this was intentional, but again, they could just be coincidental similarities. I... am R.O.B.
