Reading of 空覇

The trivia section gives the normal reading of 空覇 as そらは, but I find くうは more etymologically reasonable (and closer to the intended reading of クッパ). Can someone give the source of the そらは reading? —Dine2017 (talk) 06:00, January 5, 2025 (EST)

Not sure exactly what you mean by "more etymologically reasonable", but I agree that そらは being the "normal" reading of 空覇 is a fairly dubious claim and lacking in evidence. What I think happened is that whoever put that there knew that そら was the normal reading of 空 on its own in Japanese and extrapolated that to 空覇 (this is flawed reasoning at best, since the readings of many kanji compounds including names in Japanese are very much not determined by the sum of the normal readings of their parts). That's assuming they didn't straight-up rely upon machine translation (I can confirm that plugging 空覇 into Google Translate, at least, at the time of writing this also provides a romanization indicating a そらは reading, but of course that's not a reliable source either way). Anyway, 空覇 isn't an actual word to my knowledge nor does it seem to be commonly used as a name, so finding a proper source for its usual reading seems next to impossible, but going by what came up from a cursory internet search, there are several Japanese name-related sites that list 空覇 with the reading くうは such as this one or this one for baby names, but the only one I could find that had そらは for 空覇 is this one that claims to be powered by AI. I would agree that there is far more evidence for くうは as a reading of 空覇 compared to そらは, but then I stumbled upon this Instagram post from a mother who seemingly addresses her third son 空覇 with the provided reading そらは, so I suppose that's at least one (albeit anecdotal) source for a real-life person using that reading. But yeah, I would support either changing it to くうは or removing the provided "normal" reading entirely (since both appear to be nonstandard at best as names, even if くうは is slightly more documented). Thanks for your reply. You’re right that the reading そらは is also possible; I forgot that personal names in Japanese are a frequent source of arbitrary reading and fancy kanji spelling, meaning native and Sino-Japanese roots can combine more freely. —Dine2017 (talk) 02:56, June 3, 2025 (EDT)
