Raccoon Mario was created when [[Takashi Tezuka]] wanted a way for Mario to spin and knock away enemies with a tail. At first, the inclusion of a tailed Mario made him worried, but he wanted this new action to implemented in some way. However, the spin was originally meant for when ''Super Mario Bros. 3'' was still using a bird's-eye view, so adjusting the controls to a side-view was a challenge.
