''[[Super Mario Bros. 3]]'' is the first game to include small variants of other enemies. In the English instruction booklet, the small Goomba is referred to as a "'''Micro-Goomba'''." The ''[[Nintendo Power]]'' strategy guide refers to it as a "'''Mugger Micro-Goomba'''," referring to how they swarm onto the player when near and differentiating it from its variant, the [[Pile Driver Micro-Goomba#Naming|Pile Driver Micro-Goomba]]. In the Japanese release, it is referred to as a「'''マメクリボー'''」(''Mame Kuribō'', "Bean Goomba"). This is the name applied to nearly all small Goomba enemies in subsequent entries of the mainline ''[[Super Mario (series)|Super Mario]]'' series, typically ones presented as younger versions of normal-sized Goombas. Since 2006, the name is translated into English as "'''Mini Goomba'''," with "Micro-Goomba" no longer in use for this enemy (with the exception of a passing mention in ''[[Super Paper Mario]]'', where the name is parsed "Micro Goomba").
