The Fun Factory is a device created by Nathaniel in the eight-page children's publication Nathaniel's Fun Factory, which was published in .PDF format on the official Nintendo 1999 Annual Report website. It resembles a castle populated by Nintendo characters, including some from the Super Mario franchise.
The Fun Factory is first shown in one of Nathaniel's dreams, where it is stated to be a device that could take all of the world's boredom and convert it into fun. It is built by Nathaniel the next morning out of sticks, cardboard, and straws. The device causes Nathaniel's dreams to heavily feature Nintendo characters, with Donkey Kong being the first to appear the night after Nathaniel builds the Fun Factory.
The Fun Factory is able to adapt to Nathaniel's changing tastes as the years pass, providing Nathaniel with a dream starring Mario and Yoshi, and another starring Link and Zelda. Nathaniel's friends soon visit to see the Fun Factory, which then adds Nintendo characters to their dreams as well. It also appears to have some degree of influence over reality, as Nathaniel wishes for the "fun" to come with him when he goes to school, which causes his bus to gain wings.
After getting married and having a daughter, Nathaniel decides that he has outgrown the Fun Factory and puts it in a closet. One night, however, his daughter is bored. Hearing this, Nathaniel takes the Fun Factory out of the closet and gives it to her. It then provides her with a dream about Donkey Kong and Pokémon.
Nathaniel then finds that he himself is unable to sleep, so he goes back to his daughter's room and borrows the Fun Factory. The Fun Factory then provides Nathaniel with a dream in which he rides what is described as the Fun Factory's "most wondrous creation yet," this being a large fish with wings.
