Crab

Template:Articleabout Template:Species-infobox Crabs are a species of animals found in a few Mario games. They are often portrayed in either the same way as their Real World counterparts or as enemies.

History

Super Mario series

Mario Bros.

In the original Mario Bros. arcade game, there is an enemy crab known as Sidesteppers. The manuals for the Game Boy Advance remake labeled them Crabs, which is a translation of their Japanese name. They take two hits from below to knock down, although they get angry from the first hit and move more frantically.

Super Mario Sunshine

Small crabs populate the beaches of Super Mario Sunshine. They have no effect on the gameplay and are simply used for decoration.

Super Mario Galaxy

In Super Mario Galaxy, a crab species known as Crabber are found in many beach galaxies. To defeat a Crabber, Mario can Spin it to put it on its guard (causing it to retract into its shell), allowing Mario to circle behind them and Spin their weak point to defeat it.

New Super Mario Bros. Wii

In New Super Mario Bros. Wii, a new sub-species of crab called Huckit Crabs are introduced. They throw sand balls at the player.

Super Mario Galaxy 2

The Crabbers from Super Mario Galaxy, both red and blue, return in Super Mario Galaxy 2. They act the same way as they did in the previous game, and they are also defeated the same way. They are found in galaxies such as Starshine Beach Galaxy.

Mario Kart series

In the Mario Kart series, Crabs can be found mostly on beach stages where they walk left and right. Driving over one will make the player spin around. Sidesteppers have replaced Crabs in later installments.

Donkey Kong series

Donkey Kong (Game Boy)

Crab enemies known as Kānyī also appear in Donkey Kong on the Game Boy.

Donkey Kong Country

In the Donkey Kong Country remakes for Game Boy Color and Game Boy Advance Donkey and Diddy Kong may encounter a Crab during a challenge at Funky's Fishing. The Crab has no affect on the Kong's' score, but if they can succeed in hooking it, they will earn themselves a special Photograph from Funky Kong. It scurries across the bottom of the water rather quickly, and appears randomly, so the Kongs should always keep an eye out for it. Once the Crab is caught, it will never reappear.

Mario vs. Donkey Kong series

Mario vs. Donkey Kong 2: March of the Minis

In Mario vs. Donkey Kong 2: March of the Minis, only mechanical and miniature versions of Crabs called Mini Crabs appear. These crabs move from side to side and can hurt the Mini Marios.

Trivia

• In Super Mario Sunshine one of the islands neighboring Isle Delfino is shaped like a crab. It is seen in the opening cinematic.
• Sidesteppers and crabs all go by the generic name "crab" in other countries (including Japan), strengthening the theory that they are all meant to be the same species.
