I know this was touched on before and was left unresolved, but after some extensive play time i can confirm there isn't any rival order or rivals as a matter of fact as the information on the page doesn't match and none of the characters positions in a cup stay the same for 2 or more races. Also most of the time the rival listed doesn't appear, mainly meaning there aren't select characters that'll always appear. I have seen races where a certain character's rivals aren't always consistent. For example, in one race, Rosalina had Baby Peach and Metal Mario as her rivals, while in another, Larry and Donkey Kong were her rivals. In my opinion there aren't always the same rivals: if you play more Versus round with the same characters (like Lakitu), you can see how the rivals changes: sometimes Waluigi was the rival, sometimes it was Rosalina, sometimes Pink Gold Peach... we should remove that section, it's false! I still can't see any match ups, i went and played mario kart 7 to see if they have rivals and there actually seem to be rivals in mario kart 7, several specific characters were present in each race and mainly stayed up in the top 3 ranks, i then went back to mario kart 8 and as i said, i couldn't find any match ups. I raced exclusively as Koopa through the Grand Prix mode, and in every cup (including Mirror Mode, so 32 cups total), the first two characters in the starting lineup of the opening race were Toad and Yoshi, in that order. They weren't locks to get 2nd and 3rd in the cups, but they rarely finished outside the top 5.

That being said, whenever I play versus mode with Koopa, Toad and Yoshi aren't guaranteed opponents. I'm guessing that these "rivals" only apply to Grand Prix. Any thoughts or similar experiences to that?

Anyway, we can't include information like fire-hopping and demon-sliding since that kind of jargon is out of the wiki's scope. I think other points are direct consequences from higher speeds than actual gameplay changes (like Mini Turbos and Super Mini Turbos), but I think acceleration tiers, braking mechanics, actual speed increase, and a few other things can be mentioned. Nice work, though, and it's very interesting information that has a spot here. ::::In the end I put it in its own section because, as a component of an update, its download and activation are automatic and mandatory for online play and apparently also offline play if the Wii U is connected to internet, which is in contrast with how the DLC contents (including the free Mercedes one, which is downloaded and automatically used for the other players online, but still must be activated via eShop or the in-game shop if the player wants to use it for himself/herself) are handled. On the other hand, there are already two updates dealing with it so the updates section maybe wasn't ideal. I think Toad is a rival for Koopa Troopa, I've played Koopa 4 times in grand prix, and Toad and Yoshi were always maintaining 6th place or above. I don't think Toadette has Wario though... - Michaelmarill

:The problem is that actually tiering seems to be a part of Mario Kart since well before Mario Kart 7 was made: you can look at the table of actual data for Mario Kart Wii [http://wiki.tockdom.com/wiki/Mario_Kart_Wii here] and it can be seen that the most important factor affecting acceleration, the E value, is tiered. There are only two possible values of it while going straight and three possible values of it while drifting. Not to say that [[Mario Kart: Double Dash!!]] actually has two possible values of the factor that affects how fast you accelerate when your speed is over a certain threshold (the second factor). So I don't think Mario Kart 7 is really the first case of tiering, it's just more evident in it and in Mario Kart 8 because those games make you think that you can finely set the acceleration stat to a value you like by choosing the appropriate parts or characters, while in the previous home console games the values were forced by the vehicle or the character chosen (you can see this clearly in both tables of in-game values of ''Mario Kart Wii'' and ''Mario Kart: Double Dash!!'').<br />
:On the other hand, the incomplete subtiering of acceleration in all the engine classes of Mario Kart 8 except for 200cc is clearly a bug, since it is fixed in the 200cc engine class. They're intentionally programmed this way into the game. OK, I play 150cc Mushroom and Shell Cup, 1st place with 60 points and 3 stars with Lakitu. I keep an eye on the rivals: Waluigi and Toadette (Mushroom), Pink Gold Peach and Rosalina (Shell). Only two of these four characters appears every cup. Baby Rosalina appears on both cups instead but was out from the top 3 (placed 5th I remember). But the spotlight character of today is Roy: in Mushroom Cup he was overally last with 7 points but in Shell Cup was overally 4th with 36 points. Seriously, what happens Roy? :If done only for the actual stats that would be misleading, as Mario Kart Wii's reported stats are imprecise (the drift stat of inside drifting bikes is generally lower than that of karts). On the other hand, making a separate page both kind of stats would be an interesting idea, and in case of MK8 this would also mean including the drivers and parts stat. Of course, a separate page should also be done for item probability distributions, at this point. I think the same thing should happen to the vehicle stats. I was wondering if the approach I tried for [[Mario Kart 7]] makes more sense. Essentially, all the in-game stats are reported as they are in their own page which has, as a consequence, a clearer title and introduction, while the tables reporting all the stats in bar values - that are a convenience representation, not used at all by the game for the hidden stats - are left in the main page. Quickplay of 150cc Star Cup - I play it TWO times (I stop at Dolphin Soals because the CPUs turn into devils). First time = Wendy, Koopa, Ludwig. Second time= Ludwig, Bowser, Peach. And Koopa was 10th. Because of this, I move it there so me can work on it. :I think if they don't end always as fourth in the CPUs a character isn't rival, so the table should be named "list of character that appears in every cup with a specific character" of whatsoever. At least this is my opinion. I'll start trying it with Lakitu. Now I'm not 100% sure of who appear everytime. Ninelevendo is right, they just appear on the course, that's all. That applied to Mario with Peach and Bowser. Also, removing Baby Rosalina's "rivals" because she doesn't have Roy or Baby Peach appearing in each cup. Also, I tried out Waluigi 5 times, and Luigi and Toadette appear everytime, with Toadette always getting 3rd, and Luigi always 2nd.- {{User:Michaelmarill}} 08:55, 14 June 2014 (EDT)
 
OK, I start tracking rivals (?) according to Ninelevendo by doing this: doing the first course of acup, exit, doing the first of another cup and so for 4 cups. Keep track of all the player. I try with 4 characters and those are the results...

:I played battle mode. As Baby Luigi of course. One thing I noticed was that Luigi and Morton Koopa Jr. had yellow and blue balloons two matches in a row (matches meaning two playthroughs of the rounds). I'm gonna playing that for the first time (in easy, I don't want a GreenShellFest). @Cubeguy I think that, with few exceptions (Waluigi), tracking only the first 3 CPUs don't help us as keeping track of all (even if it's moooore tiring). A CPU that places 11th/11th in a Cup in the next can place 3rd/11th (it happens to me. I never forget this). For the first four characters I track all characters of the first Cup and I delete them if they don't appear after. I decide to change after thinking that a rival can NOT appear the first time but can in all other times... Anyway, I think that 8 times (8? It's the most tiring thing ever) are too much. Today I'll return to 4 races (not 5) but with 4 characters insted of 3. There weren't any characters that were still there so "OH POSITION DOESN'T MATTER" doesn't count here. I did some math and found that the ratio on average for ANY character showing (if every character had an equal chance of appearing) is a bit greater than 40%. In order to determine a true rival, I'd suggest that out of 100 races that a character should appear in about 70 or more. This result comes from that 40 is 60 less than 100 (100 - 40 = 60), so divide 60 in half to get 30 (60 / 2 = 30), and 30 less than 100 is 70 (100 - 30 = 70). What do you mates think? :I think that we can do this: 100 : 5 = 20. Way faster to do 100 races (OMG). If a character appears 4 times it is 80 (20 x 4 = 80) and means that is a rival. It's better semplify, but for accurate data we should do 10 races intead of 5 (100 : 10 = 10, 10 x 7 = 70), but that means for me a character per day! It will took a month! Anyway, I'm sure that doing 4 races will be OK (100 : 4 = 25, 25 x 3 = 75) {{User:Tsunami/sig}}
 
The main problem im seeing in this, is the unknown variable of how CPU's are chosen and the amount of characters the game has to choose from being 29, minus the mii, this easily results in characters re-appearing multiple times as less than half the characters are chosen. Also are they really rivals if they just appear in a race with 29 characters choosen at random by an unknown variable system. I know Yoshimo has done math towards it but the unknown nature of the random selection could mean one charcater has could have a 2% higher chance of appearing in a race than another. I'm not sure if the rivals are assigned randomly. I keep playing as Baby Daisy and I do see Luigi frequently, as well as Metal Mario, and this is from two separate play sessions, but I'm still testing. After I'm done doing several races with her, I'll do several separate races in different sessions. Also, to people mentioning that we can round down the races, we need to remember that the more we round down, the more off the experimental ratio will be from the theoretical ratio. *a bit later from initial post* Oh, and I think what Cubeguy is saying is that their positions are random, not the characters assigned. I know that positions are random... but (like I say before) Waluigi's rivals (2 out of 3) are in the top 5 when I play with them (a time)... try yourself and let me know. Waluigi's rivals are listed before this post {{User:Tsunami/sig}}
 
I've made a couple of observations about possible rivals. First, the definitive rivals seem to be limited to Grand Prix, not VS Mode. For example, most of my GP races as Bowser featured Mario and Luigi as the two biggest opponents, while in VS races this wasn't the case at all. Second, the designated rivals seem to be always shown last on the "Featured Driver" options (from left to right starting with your playable) on Highlight Edit screen. Again, as Bowser, the Mario Bros. were last on that list. This didn't seem to apply to Baby Daisy though. Okay, I just went through all the characters to see who are their rivals. I used the Highlight Reel to help me with this, checking who are the last two racers from left to right. I checked all characters at least two times, three if I needed to check something. Here's the list:

Is it because Mario Kart Stadium is the first course that makes it the "original" theme? I would argue that it's the other way around, in which Mario Kart Stadium is a cover to Mario Circuit, for two reasons: One, this course is created first, as [http://www.ign.com/articles/2014/05/29/how-anti-gravity-made-mario-kart-better mentioned by the developers themselves]. Two, this is the first course that is revealed (back in E3 2013), way before Mario Kart Stadium was revealed, so its theme is known first. Don't know how people have missed this, when the blue shell reaches a multiple path section, like rainbow roads split or dolphin shoals pipe section the blue shell is capable of taking the wrong path and missing the player in first requiring to do a full lap, this also applys to red shells. Something similar occurs in Mario Kart 7 where the Item Boxes don't break if your opponents graze them. Some of you guys are just speculating on whether this image is real or fake but I believe it's 100% fake. 1. If it's not truly confirmed, then there isn't any actual need to worry about it at least for now.
Like the case for Diddy Kong on that magazine showing that he's in the game but turned out to be a lie, we can't truly believe every leak for any new game no matter HOW legit it may look until it's been confirmed.

The way the game figures out whether to make the vehicle and character wet is by how far in the vehicle is into the water; strangely, this is not very far, and you can test this by looking for a tiny splash moving slowly towards water. The result is that the bridge has some coding on it to allow you to be on its edges and not fall off, resulting in the ability to go over that hole and come back up while going the minimum distance required to make the character and vehicle wet. This page is being over edited and done in mass to make the article worse not better. I've worked on this wiki for years now and I haven't seen the extent of ticky tack things that you're doing with this one. To address a couple of issues; wholesale reversions is a bad thing. I understand that a lot of that was capitalization, but not all. There was some really bad headers, titles, syntax, and uniformity edits I did. [[Yoshi876|Yoshi876]] you undid all of them. To that reversion Titles aren't sentences. Titles are Headers and in Headers all words are capitalized except articles (of, the, an, et. al.) and articles inside of titles/headers should be avoided as much as possible, i.e. "The Hounds of Baskerville" is acceptable because of the necessity of needing to know where the Hounds are from. But the idea that you write titles/headers as a sentence flies in the face of 99.9% of all titles headers everywhere. All office programs will even suggest that you capitalize everything that is given the text weight of a header. Books, Magazines, Articles, Chapters, Albums, Songs, Businesses, Organizations, Plays, Acts, Job Titles, Professions, even Video Games, and areas within video games all tiles and all Capitalized except articles within titles. You don't write Shy guy falls like this you write it Shy Guy Falls... because it's a title.
 
To address the 'Official' notion. This is not given the Nintendo seal. It's all unofficial. Much of this is observational, but still unofficial. The stats are very unofficial. If it's source code as one person has suggested it's hacking, which is in violation of the ToS and EULA for the software so it'd be very unofficial... and slightly illegal.
 
In short when someone puts in effort to make things better don't stifle it and stop being heavy handed. This article isn't good. I made it a little better, TWICE. Both times I have been stymied and I have helped make good articles here in the past. I would hope you would value longtime contributors and good editors. Because I'm not feeling it. Is there a NOA Portuguese (i.e. Brazilian) translation for this game? I ask because there have been a few edits related to vehicles/parts in Mario Kart 8 that seem to be direct translations of their English names, and yet the NOE Portuguese version of the game, which I own, provides completely different names for said vehicles/parts, which have entirely different meanings.
 
Take the Circuit Special for example, one of the kart bodies in Mario Kart 8. As I said, I am in possession of the NOE Portuguese translation, which calls it "Flash", yet [[Circuit Special|the current revision]] (at the time this was written) calls it "Circuito Especial". If someone could clarify this for me, I would greatly appreciate it.

if a concensus (ie: more than the two of us) emerges than a Brazillian NOA translation Don Exits, you can get to the task of deleting the bogus translation and messaging the IP that originally added them. If they have a dynamic IP, there's a chance they won't see the message, but if any reverting happen, you can just leave a message on their talk or direct them toward here. As long as you don't engage in edit warring, you'll be fine.

:The stats are copied and pasted from the game code, it is important to note that the code works with points, not with the stats written with respect to the standard parts - the image you linked to does something different still. Since reporting the stats as difference with respect to the standard parts already leads to misleading conclusions, I don't see the way of writing stats in the image better, as the criterion has a problem: it starts from the stats shown in the vehicle customization screen, but doing so leaves the Mini-Turbo stat out, forcing the finding of another criterion for it. @109.213.71.138 I could. In fact, I found MK8 50cc slightly faster than 50cc from other games. But when you have 3-starred MKDS and MK7 and 1-starred MKWii (that is hard) being unable to 3-star MK8 make you felt like a noob. I am still a seminoob though. I suck at RPGs and playing with keyboard. That's why I like to play with my mom, that sucks completely :D. A thing that I don't liked from this game are the overly hard CPUs (that let you win in some tracks, in others like Dolphin Soals it's like they want your head) and the stupid star method (you have to win always to get 3 stars. CPUs want your head. UGH). In fact, if I remember correctly (I haven't played MK8 solo for a while), I played 100cc with my friend Lakitu to unlock all the ordinary things. Strangely, in 100cc CPUs don't want your head, everything was easy. And yes, I suck with heavyweights. I took less time with an almost perfect light run than with a messy heavy run. I got a very good run with a very slow kart in Mario Kart Stadium (a sub 1.50 if I remember right). This is why I prefer lights all the way. In MKWii I prefer Dry Bones over Funky Kong. Koopa Clown Car cameo?[edit]

Master Cycle's underwater Speed[edit]

I'm saying this now, if you can't change the second stats to be identical to the REAL first stats (the first stats says that Master Cycle's underwater speed is actually +0.5), then remove the second stats on both character and vehicle part stats and keep only the first, so you can change Master Cycle's underwater speed to +0.5. 200cc[edit]

"making it more like a 400cc class than a 200cc class" I don't really agree. I've played 400cc with modded Mario Kart Wii, and it's definitely even faster than this 200cc. Anyway, we can't include information like fire-hopping and demon-sliding since that kind of jargon is out of the wiki's scope. I think other points are direct consequences from higher speeds than actual gameplay changes (like Mini Turbos and Super Mini Turbos), but I think acceleration tiers, braking mechanics, actual speed increase, and a few other things can be mentioned. Nice work, though, and it's very interesting information that has a spot here. You can probably add it to the corresponding section in the DLC spot. Icon showing how many lives Mario has left. The sentence was derived from actual experimental data, sorry that the sentence wasn't clear: http://mkboards.com/forums/threads/the-relative-speed-of-the-engine-classes.16403/ Since the speed of 50cc is 80% the speed of 150cc and the speed of 100cc is 90% the speed of 150cc, following the trend one can see that 200cc should have had 110% the speed of 150cc, since it is 150%, one can do 50cc x 5 = 250cc. 250cc + 150cc is equal to 400cc, this is why 400cc was mentioned. Regarding the techniques, I would only say that the game's physics was corrected so that some exploits are no longer effective and I would add the reference to the Youtube video, of course if even that is still too complex I can just not say it and only say the 3 other points (50% speed icnrease, complete acceleration subtiering and brakedrifting as an official new, proper technique).--Mister Wu (talk) 18:21, 3 November 2015 (EST)
Brakedrifting was a thing before this game, but I think at least the 50% speed increase, further acceleration subtiering, braking mechanics, and slightly altered game physics to work for 200cc are notable enough. In the end I put it in its own section because, as a component of an update, its download and activation are automatic and mandatory for online play and apparently also offline play if the Wii U is connected to internet, which is in contrast with how the DLC contents (including the free Mercedes one, which is downloaded and automatically used for the other players online, but still must be activated via eShop or the in-game shop if the player wants to use it for himself/herself) are handled. On the other hand, there are already two updates dealing with it so the updates section maybe wasn't ideal. Since the following section is about differences between normal play and local split screen play I thought this was an appropriate space. Ok, I'll do that. Since, however, 200cc is clearly distinct from the DLC packs in that it is usable without them and it is autoamtically deployed without the activation via eShop/in-game shop (it is actually more akin to the on-screen map and the statistics screen in this sense), I would suggest a reorganization of the DLC section like this:
  • content activated via eShop/in-game shop
    • Mercedes Benz x Mario Kart 8
    • The Legend of Zelda x Mario Kart 8
    • Animal Crossing x Mario Kart 8
  • content activated automatically when updating
    • on-screen map
    • Statistics screen
    • 200cc engine class

How the AT (acceleration tiers) work in all engine classes[edit]

Sorry for any disturbing around here, but I believe in the "List of MK8 Glitches" page should include how the acceleration tiers in all engine classes. I already did the 200cc one (I just changed the description a bit). You'll find how they work in all engine classes in the 2nd archive of the discussion. The problem is that actually tiering seems to be a part of Mario Kart since well before Mario Kart 7 was made: you can look at the table of actual data for Mario Kart Wii here and it can be seen that the most important factor affecting acceleration, the E value, is tiered. There are only two possible values of it while going straight and three possible values of it while drifting. Not to say that Mario Kart: Double Dash!! actually has two possible values of the factor that affects how fast you accelerate when your speed is over a certain threshold (the second factor). So I don't think Mario Kart 7 is really the first case of tiering, it's just more evident in it and in Mario Kart 8 because those games make you think that you can finely set the acceleration stat to a value you like by choosing the appropriate parts or characters, while in the previous home console games the values were forced by the vehicle or the character chosen (you can see this clearly in both tables of in-game values of Mario Kart Wii and Mario Kart: Double Dash!!).
On the other hand, the incomplete subtiering of acceleration in all the engine classes of Mario Kart 8 except for 200cc is clearly a bug, since it is fixed in the 200cc engine class. I don't know if it should be added also in the list of glitches since it is already reported in the 200cc section and since a fix for it is actually already in the game, even though restricted to only an engine class.--Mister Wu (talk) 18:31, 14 December 2015 (EST)

This is a 3 months late response, but I'll bite anyway to any future people who would want to add this back in: acceleration tiers are not "glitches". They're intentionally programmed this way into the game. The system is far too elaborate, functional, and systematic for it to be an accident or a hole in coding. I think the true stats should get their own page[edit]

Just as PM64 and PM:TTYD have dedicated pages for enemy stats and formations, I think this game's actual stats should get their own page(s). I mainly suggest this because I think it makes the article look like a mess it is now.

If done only for the actual stats that would be misleading, as Mario Kart Wii's reported stats are imprecise (the drift stat of inside drifting bikes is generally lower than that of karts). On the other hand, making a separate page both kind of stats would be an interesting idea, and in case of MK8 this would also mean including the drivers and parts stat. Of course, a separate page should also be done for item probability distributions, at this point. I have to agree with Smoked Chili on this. We have separate bestiary pages for a reason, and to the average reader, all of those numbers and statistics are confusing. General information that is easily understandable and accessible should be kept on the Mario Kart 8 article while we should have a sub-page for the more specialized stuff. Annnd, after thinking about it, I really think those numbers in parentheses in the character and vehicle stats sections are confusing as hell too. A split will happen, then. On the last point, the in-game stats revealed that, unsurprisingly, the PRIMA guide is correct. In-game stats are in points, not in bar values. Even the headers in the files (PTBD, PTDV, PTTR, PTWG) refers to points. This is why bar values were confusing (especially in the case of water speed for tires, as Standard Tires have max water speed). Of course, the resulting stats translation tables were made taking into account bar values, but even then they don't use bar values, they are just tables with 21 rows (the last row for the extra value). If you can suggest better ways to convey the information in both values (remember that the table I link to in the references only has points value, being a direct transcription) I would be more than happy to use it, like in MKW case.--Mister Wu (talk) 18:57, 23 June 2016 (EDT)
If you want an idea for a split, take a look at any Mario RPG article, say Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time. Look at the bestiary section. All it has is basic information that any editor can understand and conveniently use if they want to look up general information. If they want specific data for a specific enemy, they can look at the Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time bestiary, where more in-depth information such as drop rates, level, power, etc are located. I think the same thing should happen to the vehicle stats. Maybe leave the in-game information for the stats in the Mario Kart 8 article, as well as the values, but the water handling, air speed, and whatnot should go into the stats article. For the stats in parentheses, maybe we should create two tables for that, there's no need to cram all information in one table, it's not good presentation. The double tables for vehicles stats is a neat idea. I will see this weekend, as there is quite some work to do. As base stats shown in the main page's table, we might use the ones shown by the menu in bar units, at this point. They are correct, just incomplete and in a format different from the one used in-game, though still useful as the developers were targeting this format too when introducing acceleration and weight. The format for the new page would be:

I was wondering if the approach I tried for Mario Kart 7 makes more sense. Essentially, all the in-game stats are reported as they are in their own page which has, as a consequence, a clearer title and introduction, while the tables reporting all the stats in bar values - that are a convenience representation, not used at all by the game for the hidden stats - are left in the main page. I think we could use it, especially in the gallery section of this article, but I'm not sure if we need to replace the character icon, as the Mii character icon conveys important information already, without the unnecessary details of the amiibo part.. Incorrect Stats?[edit]

The stats are copied and pasted from the game code, it is important to note that the code works with points, not with the stats written with respect to the standard parts - the image you linked to does something different still. Since reporting the stats as difference with respect to the standard parts already leads to misleading conclusions, I don't see the way of writing stats in the image better, as the criterion has a problem: it starts from the stats shown in the vehicle customization screen, but doing so leaves the Mini-Turbo stat out, forcing the finding of another criterion for it. I rechecked and the stats of the gliders written in the main page and in the separate one are correct, it is important to note that the PRIMA guide has typos, so far I found typos in the stats of the Standard Tires and Blue Standard Tires, as well as in the stats of the Of-road Tires and Retro Off-Road Tires, in that the Mini-Turbo stat of the formers is 0 point while in the game it is 2 points and the Handling of the latters is 4 while it is 3 in the game.--Mister Wu (talk) 16:34, 16 January 2017 (EST)

Actually, in this case they even used a jazzy rearrangement of the theme, while in the previous console and handhled Mario Kart games the tracks as a whole were reused. By the way, Mario Circuit is pretty much the main track of Mario Kart 8, to the point that the logo of the game is based on its layout, so you can expect it to have the main theme of the game, that in this case is the theme used in Mario Kart Stadium.--Mister Wu (talk) 22:36, 2 July 2018 (EDT)

Is the brake+accelerate boost (known from Mario Kart Wii) also possible in Mario Kart 8?[edit]

When holding the accelerator and brake simultaneously in Mario Kart Wii, you can turn on the spot. Additionally, you can get a blue flame after 3 seconds to boost the acceleration from the non-moving state. Does that exist in Mario Kart 8 and 8 Deluxe? --84.147.36.71 09:48, 6 October 2018 (EDT)

This boost is actually charged in just 75 frames, and was removed in Mario Kart 8. You can still turn on the spot, although that works differently in Mario Kart 8 (it looks more like the wheels skidding in place, and indeed a skidding behavior has been added in Mario Kart 8, being most evident in 200cc).--Mister Wu (talk) 10:13, 6 October 2018 (EDT)
