Mario finds a Star Switch, which he can press down to summon a Star.
A Star Switch is an item that appears only in Super Mario 64 DS. As its name implies, it is a star-shaped switch with a ! on it, and if the player steps on it, a Power Star will appear in the Star Sphere, hidden somewhere in the level. The Power Star will only last for ten seconds before it disappears, in which case the switch must be pressed again.
