Mario and Goompa find the doll by hitting the right most tree in Jr. Troopa's territory in the woods behind the Goombas' house. After Mario returns the doll to Goombaria, he will get a Star Piece and a kiss.
A similar doll previously appeared in Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars.
