WiiWare were downloadable games and applications for the Wii that could be found on the Wii Shop Channel. While many WiiWare channels such as the Check Mii Out Channel and the Everybody Votes Channel could be downloaded for free, WiiWare games could cost anywhere between 500 to 1,500 Wii Points. The WiiWare games could only be bought on the Wii Shop Channel.

Unlike Virtual Console games, WiiWare games were original titles, and could all be played using a Wii Remote, unlike many Virtual Console games which required a Wii Classic Controller or a GameCube Controller. As of the Wii Shop Channel’s shutdown, two Mario games had been released.

The Wii Shop Channel additionally featured WiiWare demos, a selection of WiiWare games from the Wii Shop Channel that one could get a demo of for 0 Wii Points.

On January 30th, 2019, the Wii Shop Channel was shut down, and since then WiiWare games have not been accessible without piracy unless the user had bought them before January 30th,2019 on their Wii System. As of February 12th, 2019 users can still re-download their purchases, but this feature will be removed soon two. Some WiiWare games recieved ports to other platforms, but most(Including both Mario games that were released) died with the Wii Shop Channel.
