Gloombas are grumpy, blue Goombas – essentially a "Dark" Goomba. They have appeared in Paper Mario, Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, and Super Paper Mario. Gloombas live deep underground, in areas such as Toad Town Tunnels and the Pit of 100 Trials. They are always unhappy, and are much more powerful than their surface-dwelling cousins. A Gloomba gets its blue hue from living without sunlight.
Gloombas may be based off the dark colored Goombas Mario encountered in the underground levels of Super Mario Bros. However, these Goombas were colored blue to represent the lack of sunlight; they were not a sub-species of Goomba.
