Upon entering the area, a Toad talks to Mario.

Toad #1
  • "So! Off on an adventure yet again!"
"...I just hope your long vacation hasn't left you out of shape."
"You can stretch out and warm up here in this plaza."
"Oh, and I'd talk to everyone around here. Who knows what you might learn?" [when first entering area]
  • "That big, bad, mean, altogether nasty Bowser went rushing out toward the other exit!" [when talked to]
  • (! bubble) "Mario! Bowser isn't that way!" [if Mario tries to leave for the first time]
    • (! bubble) "I've been trying to tell you he's not there! Don't you listen?" [second time]
    • (! bubble) "You know what? You're a real pest! And guess what else? You still can't go that way!" [third time]
    • [The above three lines dialogue loop every time Mario tries to leave.]
Toad near bush

"My poor Mushroom!" [when talked to]
  • (! bubble) "Oh! Wow! My Mushroom! You got it for me?" [when Mario collects the mushroom]
    • Of course
      • "Oh, thank you so much! Yes! But... Say, you're going to the Beanbean Kingdom soon, huh? You'd better keep it, then."
      • "And please take this as a going-away gift! I insist!"
      • [Mario is given a Super Mushroom.]
      • "And good luck with all your jumping and stuff over there in the Beanbean Kingdom!"
    • No
      • "B-but... What? Awwww..."
  • "Won't you please return my Mushroom to me?" [when talked to after "No" is selected]
    • [choices are "Okay..." and "Nope," responses are the same as if chosen the first time]
  • "I gotta admit, though... That explosive voice the princess has now is pretty exciting... ♪"
"...But I think maybe it's a little TOO exciting! You've gotta bring her real voice back soon!" [when talked to after giving the mushroom]
  • "Practice your jumping so you can remember how high you can jump!" [when talked to after the previous dialogue]
Bowser Baddie
  • "Oh, dear! Ack! Trouble! I've gotten separated from the Bowser Baddies..."
"Um, listen... Do you know where Lord Bowser has gone?"
    • Yes
      • "Great! Which way did he go?" [he will ask this question when spoken until the right answer is given]
        • 🢂 That way
          • [Mario faces to the right and jumps twice.]
"Oh, OK. Thanks. It's almost time to assemble, and boy, I can't miss that! I've gotta hurry!"
[The Bowser Baddie jumps and runs right, hitting a hedge wall.]
"Ouch!" (turns to Mario)
"Ack! There's no exit!"
        • 🢃 This way
          • [Mario faces downwards and jumps twice.]
"Oh, OK. Thanks. It's almost time to assemble, and boy, I can't miss that! I've gotta hurry!"
[The Bowser Baddie jumps and runs down, off-screen.]
        • 🢁 Thatta way
          • [Mario faces to the north and jumps twice.]
"Oh, OK. Thanks. It's almost time to assemble, and boy, I can't miss that! I've gotta hurry!"
          • [The Bowser Baddie runs away and to the north.]
        • ❔ No idea
          • [Mario thinks and a ? bubble appears above his head.]
"Oh, no! I'm gonna be late! This is not good!"
    • No
      • "Oh, no! I'm gonna be late! This is not good!"
Toad near bush
  • "This is weird... I can't seem to find my precious belonging."
"Mario! Do you think maybe you could help me look for it?" [when first talked to]
    • Sure
      • "I think I dropped it while I was walking up here, so focus on this ledge, OK?"
"You know, when you approach suspicious-looking areas, the Action Icon changes..."
"If I were you, I'd ask that guy near the fountain about the Action Icons!"
    • Sorry
      • "Some hero you are..."
  • "Come on! Please? Just help me find my precious belonging!" [when talked to after saying no]
    • [choices are "OK" and "No way," responses are the same as if chosen the first time]
  • [After saying yes, Mario should walk south until he reaches a wall. The Action Icon will change. Pressing A will result in a pop-up that reads "You found something precious!"]
  • "Hey! That's it! That's the precious belonging I've been looking for! Thank you!"
"You are the best! THE BEST! Please take this in return!"
[The Toad gives Mario a 1-Up Mushroom and walks off the bush.] [when talked to with precious belonging]
  • "Keep up the good work!" [when talked to afterwards]
Luigi
  • [Luigi speaks gibberish. A speech bubble of Bowser laughing appears.]
  • [Mario gets a (!) bubble above his head.]
  • [Luigi faces north, jumps, and speaks gibberish. A speech bubble of Bowser walking north appears.]
Pink Toad
  • "Oh! Mario! Your mustache looks so silky-smooth today!"
"Show me that super jump!"
[An A button prompt appears. Pressing it makes Mario jump.]
"Oh! That was so awesome!♪"
"Mario, you're the only one in the whole world who can jump like that! You rule!"
  • "It's just like I always say: If you see that mustache and that jump, it's Mario!" [when talked to afterwards]

  • "So, you're going to the Beanbean Kingdom? That's quite a journey. Do you want to learn about Action Icons before you go?"
  • "Oh. I see. Fine, then. Great. Good luck in the Beanbean Kingdom. You'll need it."
  • "Aha! You're really into learning about Action Icons, aren't you?"
  • "OK. This is lesson # 3..."
  • "OK. This is lesson # 4..."
  • "You're really sort of a pest. OK. This is the last time..."
  • "See, Action Icons are... Well... Go read the Instruction Booklet."
  • "Haha! Oh, all right, all right..."
  • "Action Icons are symbols that show you what actions you can perform at any given time."
  • "If you press the A Button Button when this icon is showing, you'll jump. BOING! You're good at that, right?"
  • "Stand in front of someone and press the A Button Button when this icon appears to speak."
  • "And when this icon appears, press the A Button Button to do a little investigating..."
  • "You'll see this icon when you stand near signs and things. Keep an eye out for it!"
  • "So, that's the fast and dirty explanation. Want to hear it again?"
  • "Hey, by the way, is Luigi staying behind to keep an eye on the home front?"
