(This is a draft of a rewrite of Race Course)

Courses (or tracks) in the Mario Kart series are individual race tracks that make up a larger Cup. A Cup typically comprises four courses total, with points awarded to players based on their final placement in each course. Courses can also be raced on individually or out of order in game modes such as Time Trials and VS Race.

Most games in the series categorize the courses they include as either new courses — courses that have been introduced for the first time — or classic courses — courses returning from a previous Mario Kart title. In most instances, classic courses have a prefix (see below) denoting the system of their game of origin.

Overview

In the Mario Kart series, courses come in a variety of configurations: while most courses adopt a common three-lap layout, some are linear and are split into three or more sections (e.g. 3DS Maka Wuhu or Mount Wario), while others may have more laps due to their smaller size (e.g. GCN Baby Park or Koopa Troopa Beach).
