Spin Blocks are platforms that are found in New Super Mario Bros.. When stepped on, Mario or Luigi will start spinning and will fly high into the air, then glide back down slowly, allowing the player to travel longer distances. Pressing the down button on the D-Pad while in the air causes Mario and Luigi to perform the Drill Spin, which has the ability to destroy Brick Blocks in a row or just to descend faster.

Spin Blocks are also found in the Mario vs. Luigi 2-player mode. It only appears on the ice level, where a Star will eventually appear. There are however always coins hovering above the Spin Block.

Page 22.</ref> are platforms that are found only in New Super Mario Bros. When Spin Blocks are stepped on, the player starts spinning rapidly. If they jump in this state, they will launch high into the air and slowly glide back down while spinning. This move is similar to what would happen after Mario jumps on a Spindrift or a Fly Guy in Super Mario 64. Pressing Paddown while in the air causes the player to perform the Drill Spin, which causes them to drop more quickly and has the ability to destroy multiple bricks in a row.

Spin Blocks are also found in the Mario vs. Luigi two-player mode. A Spin Block appears only in the ice level, where a Big Star will sometimes spawn. There are always coins hovering above the Spin Block.
The movements Mario or Luigi make when they jump on the Spin Block is similar to the movements they make when they use the Propeller Mushroom/Propeller Block in New Super Mario Bros. Wii.

Spindrifts were originally going to appear in New Super Mario Bros., but they were replaced by Spin Blocks in the final build.

Spin Blocks were likely replaced by the Propeller Mushroom in New Super Mario Bros. Wii, which functions very similarly, allowing the player to perform both the spinning upward launch and the Drill Spin.

Trivia
*The Spin Block resembles the Countdown Platform from the Yoshi games in its shape and design, being a floating half-sphere with a scale-like platform on top, though the two objects have completely different functions.
