Choco Island 1 is a very short course and one lap typically takes not much more than 20 seconds to complete. Along the sides of the track are passive Piranha Plants, which will make racers spin out when hit. The off-road on the sides of the course also slows down racers a lot more than other types of off-road. The course begins with a slight left turn, a slight right turn, and a left turn where racers encounter the only set of ? Panels. There is then a more gradual left turn while racers go off many wide bumps in the road, followed by another slight right turn and slight left turn. A brief stretch with more narrow bumps follows, and then racers take a left turn to reach a portion of track that is partially covered in slippery mud. After a slight turn turn and a gradual left turn, racers reach the finish line.
Choco Island 1 is a very short course and one lap typically takes not much more than 20 seconds to complete. Its hazards are Piranha Plants which will make the driver slide once contacted. Another obstacle is slippery mud, which makes it difficult to steer. There are also many small bumps in the road, causing karts to automatically hop somewhat, also increasing control difficulty. When driving off the regular road on the darker ground, the kart slows down extremely, unless a mushroom or a star is used. There is only one place where items can be obtained, just after the start.

Choco Island 1 returns in Mario Kart Tour, making its debut in the Cooking Tour after its map was found in the game's files. The course remains faithful to its original apperance, with some changes. The starting S-curve's width is evened-out, many of the bumps after the initial set are removed (like with Choco Island 2), the curve with the mud patches is longer and evened-out, and the inside walls are thinner; the wall near the first few bumps has a gap in it, and a new wall is also added near the last turn. The course now has a starting banner with the classic Mario Kart logo. In the reverse and trick variant, some of the ramps are partially in the ground.

The course also appears as Choco Island 1R (reversed), Choco Island 1T (with ramps), and Choco Island 1R/T (reversed with ramps). In the T variant, two aggressive Piranha Plants in pipes are present. The first two were introduced alongside the normal variant in the Cooking Tour, while the last was introduced in the 2021 Autumn Tour.

While many retro courses in Mario Kart Tour uses their original music arrangements, Choco Island 1 reuses the Mario Kart DS arrangement of its music, which is heard in Choco Island 2.
