Some believe that it is a scrapped sequel to the original ''Donkey Kong'', a precursor to the 1994 [[Game Boy]] [[Donkey Kong (Game Boy)|remake]]. Another possibility is being an earlier name for ''[[Donkey Kong Classics]]'', a two-in-one cartridge containing ''[[Donkey Kong (video game)|Donkey Kong]]'' and ''[[Donkey Kong Jr. (video game)|Donkey Kong Jr.]]''.


Not much is known about the title aside from the fact that it was considered a follow-up to ''[[Donkey Kong (game)|Donkey Kong]]'', ''[[Donkey Kong Jr. (game)|Donkey Kong Jr.]]'', ''[[Donkey Kong Jr. Math]]'', and ''[[Donkey Kong 3]]''.<ref name="funclub" /> The two blurbs describing the game suggest that [[barrel]]-throwing would return as a mechanic, and that [[Donkey Kong]] would appear as a playable character for the first time.<ref name="playersguide" /><ref name="funclub" /> No images were ever shown of the game and it is not known if ''Return of Donkey Kong'' ever existed past the conceptual stage.
It is also possible that it was to be a [[Famicom Disk System]] remake of the original game, in a similar fashion to ''[[Kaette Kita Mario Bros.]]''
