In battle, they are nearly identical to Goombas, each with an attack power of 1 and their only attack being a headbonk. The only notable difference is their higher HP; Red Goomba has 7 HP and Blue Goomba has 6 HP. This is still enough to provide a sufficient threat to Mario, as he does not have access to Action Commands yet, including the ability to guard.

When defeated, the Goomba Bros. begin to cry, and retreat out of shame. They reappear a short time later at the Goomba King's Fortress, where they aid the Goomba King in battle. Since they are not fully recovered from the previous fight, they only have 2 HP each, the same as a normal Goomba. Mario can easily defeat them both at once via an attack item (e.g. Fire Flower) or by attacking the nearby Goomnut tree.

When the three Goombas are defeated, they retreat into the fortress. Inside, the Goomba King confers with his minions. Red Goomba reveals that he hid the ! Switch that opens the way back to Toad Town outside in a bush. Before the Goomba King has time to relocate the switch to a less obvious location, Mario finds and presses it. The bridge jumps out of the fortress itself, sending the Goomba King careening into the sky.
