At the beginning of the game, the first player is prompted to choose whether to play against a friend or the computer. If the former is selected, each player will take [[Mario]]'s or [[Luigi]]'s side, which will determine the color of their counters (red or green). When playing against the computer, the human player has to pick a difficulty level (Easy or Difficult) and will automatically take Mario's side.
