Some time after the events of Donkey Kong Country, Donkey Kong is relaxing at a beach, sitting on a chair while drinking a banana milkshake. Funky Kong is busy surfing waves among the seagulls. Cranky Kong walks up to Donkey Kong and hits him on the head with his cane. He asks Donkey Kong why he is sitting around if he is a "big star". Donkey Kong replies that even stars need time off. Cranky says that he never took breaks, "whisking off maidens and throwing barrels seven days a week". Donkey Kong tells him "Why don't you go pester Diddy Kong or something? Leave me in peace for once!". In response, Cranky mumbles that Diddy is with his girlfriend Dixie Kong before leaving. Donkey Kong then goes to sleep in his chair.
At night, | At night, Diddy and his Dixie are worried because Donkey Kong has not returned. They go to the beach with the other Kongs, Cranky, Wrinkly Kong, and Funky Kong to investigate, and the Kongs find many footprints surrounding Donkey Kong's broken chair. They find a note in the chair which reads:
:Hah-arrrrh! We have got the big monkey! If you want him back, you scurvy dogs, you'll have to hand over the banana hoard! Kaptain K. Rool | :Hah-arrrrh! We have got the big monkey! If you want him back, you scurvy dogs, you'll have to hand over the banana hoard! Kaptain K. Rool
Cranky suggests handing over the banana hoard to K. Rool. Diddy | Wrinkly sighs that she had thought they had seen the last of K.Rool for a while.. Cranky suggests handing over the banana hoard to K. Rool. However, Diddy exclaims that he and DK had already gotten the bananas before and how the latter would go insane over his bananas again. Cranky asks him if he had any other ideas, and he and Dixie reply that they have got to rescue DK, but Cranky laughs, finding this to be ridiculous. Funky does not want to go, having hatred for adventures, and Wrinkly states that she is to old for it. Cranky also refuses to go and proceeds to break the fourth wall by commenting on his past self and how he would not be seen "dead in a game that scrolls and has bonus levels and end bosses!".
Diddy proclaims that he has already been on an adventure with Donkey Kong last time and he can do it, but Cranky disqualifies him because he had only been in one game and did not have his title in the game, making him disheartened. Dixie attempts to defend Diddy by challenging Cranky that Diddy can be a better hero than him. In response, Cranky claims that Diddy cannot get past all the Kremlings and traps by himself, but Dixie replies to this insisting that she joins Diddy. Diddy tells her that the adventure is dangerous, but she teases him by asking him if he was afraid before telling him not to argue - if he is going, she is going with him. Knowing that he cannot change Dixie's mind, Diddy allows her to join him. Cranky decides to give Diddy a chance to become a videogame hero, and Funky and Wrinkly encourage him to go on, the former telling him to go for it. As soon as the sun rosed, the two Kongs set out.
The two Kongs travel through Crocodile Isle, the hometown of the Kremlings. They defeat numerous enemies and collect items on their way. Diddy and Dixie first travel aboard Gangplank Galleon, a large pirate ship docked at the coast. After completing the world, Diddy and Dixie move on to the volcanic world, Crocodile Cauldron, then the swampy Krem Quay, then the abandoned amusement park Krazy Kremland, and a spooky woods, Gloomy Gulch. Diddy and Dixie eventually reach the end of the sixth world, K. Rool's Keep, where they find Donkey Kong tied up in a chamber. Just as they celebrate, Donkey Kong is pulled up into K. Rool's personal airship, The Flying Krock. | The two Kongs travel through Crocodile Isle, the hometown of the Kremlings. They defeat numerous enemies and collect items on their way.
