In their debut game, the Cookies would came from either the top or the side. The plot of the game is to clear them out, which could be done by pressing the A button and switching the entire row's all cookies. Once a row was, either horizontally or verically, filled with the same kind of cookies, it was clear. The cookie shaped like a Yoshi-head acted like any kind of cookie.

Mario and Yoshi were required to bring Yoshi Cookies to Boshi in exchange for a race. Yoshi Cookies also could be used in battle where they would summon Yoshi and he would eat an enemy to defeat it completely. Sometimes, it awarded Mario an item as well. However, Yoshi can't eat some enemies and bosses; if so, Yoshi would give Mario a Yoshi Candy or return another Yoshi Cookie back.
