Not to be confused with its non-spiny counterpart,the Blue Shell.
The Spiny Shell is an item from the Mario Kart series, making its first appearance in Mario Kart 64. Its general purpose is to knock out the leader of the race. Starting in Mario Kart: Double Dash!, the Spiny Shell gained a pair of wings, making the item a lot more effective, with almost a 100% hit rate. The new Spiny Shell also exploded when it hit the poor racer in first place. Before MK:DD!, the Spiny Shell moved along the ground, along with its counterparts, the Green and Red shells.
