“Let those who would disturb her sleep fall into the depths of endless darkness...”
Dark Bones, Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door

Dark Bones are the most powerful type of Dull Bones. Instead of being a pale gray with red shoes, they are a bluish violet with purple shoes. Dark Bones are only found in the Palace of Shadow (where they are seen twice, once in a corridor and yet again in Riddle Tower) in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door.

It is unknown whether Dark Bones affiliate with Bowser or not, but they appear to be affiliated with the Shadow Queen. However, a certain Dark Bones's pre-battle speech seems to indicate that it has been ordered to keep the Shadow Queen from awakening.

Dark Bones also appears in Mario Super Sluggers as a playable character. In challenge mode he kidnaps Dixie Kong and battles Mario and Co.

Trivia

  • The Red Dry Bones of Mario Superstar Baseball (which would more logically be assumed to be a Red Bones) would seem to be designed after Dark Bones, though it has a red, spiked shell and a horn on the end of its nose, similar to a Rex. It also wore red shoes and gloves making itself different from Dark Bones. It's worth noting that Dark Bones is a slightly more powerful hitter than the standard Dry Bones.
  • Showstopper, the special move, can actually destroy the Dark Bones miniboss.
