Pit

An Abyss is or Bottomless pit is present in most Mario games and Donkey Kong games. Normally when a character falls in they lose a life.

Appearences

Donkey Kong was the first Nintendo game to feature them. Many arcade fans reacted in annoyance though the game did very well and was a hit.

Trivia

Strangly Super Mario Sunshine didn't feature them outside bonus levels.
