Lumaleee is one of Bowser's captives, alongside Luigi, the Penguin King, some penguins, some Goombas, and later in the film, the Kongs. He has a child's voice and a somewhat twisted and nihilistic personality, mentioning that death is the only escape from their imprisonment. The Penguin King tells Luigi to ignore him and that he is "cute but [cuckoo]."<ref>Illumination (March 9, 2023). The Super Mario Bros. Movie | Final Trailer. The Lumalee is later freed from his imprisonment by Mario and Donkey Kong, which visibly dismays him. After the ending of the film, Lumalee appears and tells the audience that since the film is over, all that is left is them and the "infinite void." He then plays the Super Mario Bros. Ground Theme on the saxophone to start off the end credits music.

A figure of a Lumalee appeared in a line of The Super Mario Bros. Movie toys released by McDonald's as part of a Happy Meal campaign outside of Europe and Oceania. The release of this toy predated any official, explicit announcement of a Lumalee character appearing in the movie. The character was later revealed officially in the movie's third and final trailer.
