This item transforms Mario or Luigi into Hammer Mario or Hammer Luigi, which gives them the ability to throw hammers, like the Hammer Bros.

Hammers thrown by Hammer Mario or Hammer Luigi can defeat almost everything, including Bowser, but as with other power-ups, one hit from an enemy causes them to lose their power. They also gain a fireball-proof shell when ducking (like Buzzy Beetles, which they resemble), but cannot slide down hills. Super Mario Advance 4: Super Mario Bros. 3 adds a new utility to this suit: its hammers can break Rock Blocks.
The Hammer Suit (also referred to as Sledge Bros.' Suit) is an item found in Super Mario Bros. 3. This item transforms Mario or Luigi in Hammer Mario which gives him the ability to throw Hammer Bros. Hammers. They also gain a fire-proof shell when ducking just like Buzzy Beetles, but taking away his ability to slide down hills.

Hammers are an excellent weapon at defeating just about everything, including Bowser. But like all the suits, just one hit from an enemy will cause Mario to lose this costume.
In the original Super Mario Bros. 3, retrieving a Hammer Suit will make Mario and Luigi's skin turn a darker, yellowish tone which resembles the appearance of Hammer Bros in this game, while no other power-ups in the game do so. On the map screen, in official artwork, and in other versions, Mario and Luigi's skin colors stay the same when they wear the suit.

The suit never made an appearance on The Adventures of Super Mario Bros. 3, the television adaption of Super Mario Bros. 3. However, Mario and Luigi do similarly disguise themselves as Sledge Bros. in the episode "Reptiles in the Rose Garden", although they gain no special abilities by doing so, and their costumes fool no one.

Trivia
*The Hammer Suit (as well as Hammer Mario) is not mentioned in the original NES or All-Stars versions' instruction booklets. The Virtual Console re-release's Operations Guide, which is based on them, also has no reference to it. In the original game, it is something of a "secret" powerup, as it only shows up in hidden areas and randomly from Toad Houses, though in later versions, it is made to consistently appear in certain Toad Houses.

*In non-remake versions of Super Mario Bros. 3, retrieving a Hammer Suit will make Mario and Luigi's skin turn a darker, yellowish tone, a feat that no other power-ups perform. It is unknown what purpose this skin color change has, but it is possible that Nintendo placed the odd effect in to make the textures of Mario and Luigi's skin bear more resemblance to that of the Koopas and Hammer Brothers themselves. As aforementioned, Mario and Luigi's skin color stays the same when they wear the suit in remakes.

*If Mario or Luigi destroy an airship with a Hammer Suit, the Mushroom King will say, "Hey, how about lending me your clothes? No dice?! What a drag."
*If Mario/Luigi ducks when in a Hammer Suit, he resembles a Buster Beetle.
*In the Virtual Console re-release, the Hammer Suit is not mentioned in the Operations Guide.
