Mario Kart 3DS - 7 Reasons You Should Care
A few weeks ago, Nintendo said Mario Kart for 3DS was further along than we might think. At E3, it turned out they were right with the game scheduled to come out in 2011 and being playable on the show floor. Simply dubbed “Mario Kart,” here are some of the details:
Coins Are Back! Coins are back in the tracks to collect again in key places. We’re not sure entirely what they do this time around but in past Mario Karts they would make you go faster.
Mario Kart…Kite? The most different feature for Mario Kart is the inclusion of hang gliders when hitting big air. The hang glider pops out automatically and you can aim up to keep going farther which may be faster in the air or down to land on the ground quicker. This new feature keeps you in control all the time instead of going into auto-pilot during jumps like in previous Mario Karts. In one level, you could glide from side to side to coin rings. The downside to flying longer is that if you’re hit by an item in the air, you lose your kite and tumble down to the Earth or a massive hole.
There are also underwater sections where a propeller pops out the back of the kart. Does this mean the end of Lakitu? Possibly.
Drifting Longer for a Boost Remains Mario Kart on 3DS uses the new Mario Kart Wii formula of drifting longer for blue sparks and a boost instead of the classic formula of drifting and moving the analog stick left and right. Personally, I prefer the classic way better and added another layer of challenge but there’s a popular opinion out there that it ruined the game. Those people may not have been good at Mario Kart and loved the “fair” items.
Customizable Karts Before the Race Mario Kart 3DS lets you customize the kart body and tires before the race. The most hilarious part was adding mini Monster Truck tires to the kart. I did this and won only to find out later that they’re best off-road. Smaller tires are better on city streets. The kart body size may play a factor in being bounced around by other races.
If it’s not broke, don’t fix it! Mario Kart 3DS looks and plays a lot like Mario Kart DS, which arguably was the best game in the series. Mario Kart hasn’t been a series about stellar graphics but I’m sure if I looked back it would be a step up from the DS version.
Online Multiplayer Confirmed! This is a Nintendo game after all so we can never assume about online. Multiplayer games do support up to eight players but I’m not sure if this includes online matches.
New Lease on Level Design? Retro Studios (DKCR and the Metroid Prime series) is co-developing Mario Kart by helping make some of the courses. I would assume one of those levels was a DKCR inspired track with tiki enemies roaming around. Hopefully, Retro’s influence will add even more variety to the track design.
Overall, Mario Kart on 3DS plays great and its only a matter of time before we have to hand our wallets over to Nintendo to play it.
