At the start of battle, Swoopulas are perched on the ceiling and can be knocked down with an item, [[List of moves|Special Move]], certain partner moves, or the [[Quake Hammer]] or [[Hammer Throw (badge)|Hammer Throw]] abilities. They fly down briefly to attack, but return to their roost unless previously knocked down. They leech two hit points at a time up to five times unless an [[Action Command]] gauge is filled up first, similar to [[Jungle Fuzzy]].

Their leeching move now takes four hit points, but is only used once per turn. An even stronger version known as [[Swampire]] appears near the end of the Pit of 100 Trials.
