Hammers thrown by Hammer Mario or Hammer Luigi can defeat almost everything, including [[Bowser]], but as with other power-ups, one hit from an enemy causes them to lose their power. The characters also gain a fireball-proof shell when ducking, but lose their ability to [[slide|slide down hills]]. If Mario or Luigi ducks while in the Hammer Suit, they resemble a [[Buzzy Beetle]].

In the original ''Super Mario Bros. 3'', retrieving a Hammer Suit will make Mario and Luigi's skin turn a darker, yellowish tone, while no other power-ups in the game do so. It is unknown what purpose this skin color change has, but it is possible that [[Nintendo]] placed the odd effect in to make the textures of Mario and Luigi's skin bear more resemblance to that of the [[Koopa Troopa]]s and Hammer Brothers themselves. On the map screen and in remakes, Mario and Luigi's skin colors stay the same when they wear the suit.

In ''[[The Adventures of Super Mario Bros. 3]]'' episode "[[Reptiles in the Rose Garden]]", Mario and Luigi wear [[Sledge Bro]] disguises that resemble Hammer Suits to sneak aboard and hijack [[Bowser|King Koopa's]] [[Airship|Doom Ship]] so they can use the [[Levitation Beam]] to warp the [[White House]] back to its rightful place in [[Washington, D.C.]] and bring [[Wendy O. Koopa|Kootie Pie]] back home before she can take over [[United States of America|America]], and before Koopa can use the beam to attack other countries as well. Although they do not use the hammer powers that come with the suits, they attempt to use them to trick a group of Sledge Bros. into thinking they are one of them, but the disguises fail to trick them.

==Trivia==
*The Hammer Suit (as well as Hammer Mario) is not mentioned in the original [[Nintendo Entertainment System|NES]] or ''[[Super Mario All-Stars|All-Stars]]'' versions' instruction booklets. The [[Virtual Console]] re-release's Operations Guide, which is based on them, also has no reference to it. In the original game, it is something of a "secret" powerup, as it only shows up in hidden areas and randomly from [[Toad House]]s, though in later versions, it is made to consistently appear in certain Toad Houses.
