“Spiny may have a soft underside, but its quills will strike you if you get too close.”
Donkey Kong Country 2 manual, page 31

Spinies are porcupine enemies that appear in Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest and Donkey Kong Land 2.

Spinies have brown fur and pointed black and white quills. This protects them from both rear and jumping attacks. If Diddy Kong and Dixie Kong attempt either type of attack, they get injured. The Kongs can defeat a Spiny by rolling into its exposed front, throwing an object at it, or by jumping on it with either Rambi or Rattly. Team up can also defeat a Spiny, regardless of its quills. A Klampon sometimes accompanies a Spiny, such as in Castle Crush. Klampons are the opposite of Spiny in that they cannot be defeated from roll attacks, but are vulnerable to jumps.

In Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest, they appear in Glimmer's Galleon, Hornet Hole, Ghostly Grove, Gusty Glade, Parrot Chute Panic, Windy Well, Castle Crush, Jungle Jinx, and Fiery Furnace. In Donkey Kong Land 2, they appear in Hornet Hole, Ghostly Grove, Gusty Glade, Parrot Chute Panic, and Windy Well.

A similar enemy, known as Bristles, appear in Donkey Kong Country 3: Dixie Kong's Double Trouble! and Donkey Kong Land III.
