Donkey Kong Jr. is an arcade game and the second game ever to feature Mario. It was the direct sequel to Donkey Kong. This game and the similar Donkey Kong II are the only games where Mario is the antagonist.

Donkey Kong Jr. had to rescue his father, Donkey Kong, from Mario, perhaps holding a grudge for the kidnapping of his girlfriend Pauline. Donkey Kong Jr. had to climb vines and leap on trampolines to rescue his dad from Mario. Donkey Kong Jr. also had to avoid Snapjaws.

Donkey Kong Jr. never enjoyed the sales or the following that the original Donkey Kong did, but it did well enough to warrant a third sequel, Donkey Kong 3.

In the Donkey Kong Country series created by the company Rareware, it was revealed that Cranky Kong was the kidnapped character and Donkey Kong was Donkey Kong Jr. However, Nintendo seems to not like this and calls the current Donkey Kong the kidnapped one.
