Wario Land: Shake It![edit]

Super Whirl Jump[edit]

Merge Bar Spin to Wire Spin (and maaaybe merge Super Whirl Jump to it as well)[edit]

So, it's been a while since we've split Wire from Rope and merged the Bars to Wire. Now though, it appears that we still have Wire Spin and Bar Spin as separate articles, even though they're essentially the same thing, an acrobatic move in which the user spins around a horizontal bar or rope.

It appears that the only reason these are split is that the object the user is spinning around on isn't the same thing, but with Wire and Bar sharing the same article, that is rendered moot. And even if we decide to split bars from wires in the future, I'd still argue it's a rather minuscule, pointless split, that only leads to confusion (see the old discussion atop this talk page). You still spin around on a thin (horizontal) thing in the exact same fashion, in order to jump higher. We haven't split Fly into multiple semi-articles because one method of flying uses a raccoon tail and another uses a propeller helmet, so I feel like we shouldn't have to be splitting hairs in this specific case either. Heck, this Wire Spin article even mentions it's also known as the Bar Spin, too.

Now, that brings into question if we should also merge the Super Whirl Jump to Wire Spin. I'm not entirely sure, because the Super Whirl Jump also seemingly requires F.L.U.D.D. to activate it; also, because the Super Whirl Jump is used on tightropes, which were kept on the Rope page. However, it's still the same motion (spinning around on a thin, horizontal thing in order to jump higher), so I thought it'd be fair to include it in the proposal.

Merge Bar Spin to Wire Spin[edit]

  1. Arend (talk) Per proposal: we could definitely set the bar a bit lower when it comes to defining this term.
  2. DrippingYellow (talk) "Bar Spin" is even listed as an alternate name for Wire Spin from the MvDK 3DS Ambassador Program manual. We might as well, it would be consistent with how we handle Ground Pound/Smash Attack.
  3. Nintendo101 (talk) Per comments. I would prefer keeping Super Whirl Jump separate since it seems to be recognized under a different name and is dependent on F.L.U.D.D.
  4. Camwoodstock (talk) Primary option. We merged Wires and Bars, and it's not like we haven't merged similar moves with different names before as DrippingYellow mentioned, so why not these, right?
  5. Archivist Toadette (talk) Pretty sure the Super Whirl Jump is the move that comes after the Wire Spin. But yeah, as per my old comment, both "spins" are clearly the same move.
  6. EvieMaybe (talk) it wouldve been really funny if SMBW let you spin on pole blocks and we had a Bar Spin, Wire Spin and Pole Spin before this proposal. per all

Merge both Bar Spin and Super Whirl Jump to Wire Spin[edit]

  1. Camwoodstock (talk) Secondary option. We figure that given the aforementioned merge of the Ground Pound/"Smash Attack" by DrippingYellow, given all three of these moves involve, well, spinning across a wire/bar to jump off it for extra momentum, this seems only fair. We wouldn't consider it as urgent as merging Bar Spin to Wire Spin seeing as it's not like we had a proposal to merge Bar, Wire, and Super Whirl to the same article, but it would be something we'd like to see eventually.

Okay, so I found a pretty high-quality PDF of the Japanese Wario Land Shake manual (which I assume is hosted on an official Nintendo website, given the URL), and it details the bar spin on Page 20, with the title 鉄棒てつほうやロープで反動はんどうをつける. According to Google Translate, that roughly translates to "Use a horizontal bar or rope to provide some momentum". That's already a full sentence, so I'm not sure if that's the actual Japanese name of the move, and I'm not well-versed enough on Japanese to dissect this title, let alone the description for the move. Best I could come up with is 反動はんどうをつける, which roughly translates to "rebound", according to Google Translate. Still, it's something. Oh, I should also note that the move is also on the Japanese Wario Land Shake website (which surprisingly still works). Here, this section is given the title 鉄棒につかまる, which roughly translates to "Hold on to the iron bar", which is a direction too, but doesn't even really disclose the spin part, which this section is about, so I'm not entirely sure that's the name of the move either. Okay, next up, Donkey Kong GB. I found the electronic manual for its Japanese Virtual Console release, where the Wire Spin is seemingly referred to as 大車輪, which roughly translates to "big wheel" or "large wheels" (as Mario is spinning like a wheel here). It's a lot clearer than with the Wario Land Shake manual. Yeah, it may not be the manual for the original release, but it'll have to do for now. Nintendo Co., Ltd. seems to have a lot of reverence for their old websites, or at least when compared to Nintendo of America. They still host sites from the early 90s for obscure Game Boy titles like SolarStriker. If there is an old game published by Nintendo, it almost definitely has an actively hosted website. Your inclination on the booklet is also correct. Nintendo hosts PDFs of their manuals through official outlets. They do this for consumers who need to print them again in case theirs became lost or damaged.
Any who, while「大車輪」literally translates to "big wheel", it is the Japanese name for giant, a proper move in gymnastics. In addition to the GB Donkey Kong, this is the name used for the move on page 14 of the Mario vs. Donkey Kong instruction booklet. Even if unnamed in the material available to us, the action in Wario Land: Shake It! is pretty clearly derived from the same move. I support a merger. - Nintendo101 (talk) 09:53, April 28, 2024 (EDT)
